Make research accessible
Publishing open access allows content to be freely available online to anyone. You will benefit by:
- reaching a wider audience
- meeting funder requirements
- allowing others to use, adapt and attribute your work.
Griffith University is committed to open research and supports researchers in making their work openly accessible through key pathways.
Read and publish agreements
Publish in eligible hybrid or open access journals covered by read and publish agreements. These allow immediate open access with no Article Processing Charges (APC) via the publisher's platform.
Repository deposit
Publish in a subscription-based journal and deposit the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) in Griffith Research Online (GRO). Submit creative research outputs directly into Creative Works.Open access journals
Publish directly in an open access journal to allow immediate open access via the publisher's platform. Some journals don't have APC but most do. Griffith does not centrally fund APC. For externally funded research include these costs in your budget.
Read and publish agreements
Read and publish agreements support open access by covering Article Processing Charges (APC) through library-managed arrangements that combine subscription and publishing costs.
These agreements are negotiated by CAUL as a consortia. Griffith only participates in some agreements.
These agreements:
- are available to Griffith staff and HDR candidates who are corresponding authors
- are restricted to selected publishers
- are generally limited to journal articles in subscription-based or hybrid journals
- do not cover additional charges (for example, colour pages, supplementary material)
- may have national publishing caps and title exclusions.
Choose an agreement
- Search the CAUL list for your journal title.
- Filter to Griffith University using Select your institution.
- Confirm Griffith is eligible for the agreement.
- Check if article caps apply and if they have been reached.
- Read the Agreement details tab.
- Review the Information for authors tab.
- Include your Griffith email and institutional affiliation during submission.
- Choose a CC BY licence.
Browse and search for journal titles across CAUL agreements.

- Association of Computing Machinery
- Biochemical Society (Portland Press)
- Brill
- Cambridge University Press
- CSIRO
- Emerald
- Institute of Physics

Agreements with article caps
A limited number of open access articles can be published each year. The total cap is shared across universities, with availability based on the order of acceptance. Once the annual limit is reached, no additional articles can be published under the agreement for the remainder of the year.
After annual caps are reached:
- articles in subscription-based (hybrid) journals will be behind a paywall unless APC are paid
- standard APC apply to articles made open access
- If your research is subject to an open access funder mandate you must either pay the APC or deposit the article to GRO.
