How to submit

For information relevant to the three major assessment tools, refer to the following pages:

What if something goes wrong with my submission?

Occasionally, you may find that you encounter problems with online assessment submission. For example:

  • Your computer crashes or your internet disconnects during an online exam or quiz
  • You accidentally exit an online exam or quiz or accidentally click Submit before answering all the questions
  • You receive an error when trying to upload an assignment file
  • You accidentally upload the incorrect file for an assignment and you cannot make any further submissions

If you encounter issues like this, the pages linked from the 'How to Submit' section above may contain information on the cause of the problem. You may also be able to receive assistance from your Course Convenor and the IT Service Centre. It is important to note the type of assistance provided by these members of staff will be different.

Your Course Convenor has the access and authority to allow additional assessment attempts at their discretion. For this reason, we generally recommend contacting your Course Convenor with a description (and screenshots, if possible) of any errors or issues you encountered so they are aware of what happened. This allows them to make an informed decision about additional attempts. They may contact the IT Service Centre if they require any further technical information, advice or assistance.

In general, the IT Service Centre may be able to provide technical advice regarding why an issue occurred and how to avoid it happening again. Providing a clear description (and screenshots, if possible) of the issue when you contact the IT Service Centre will make it easier for support staff to assist. However in some cases the cause of the issue may remain unclear. Whether the issue can be identified or not, in most cases you will be directed to your Course Convenor for any decisions related to receiving an additional attempt. You may also be directed to make an application for deferred assessment or special consideration in some circumstances.

What if there are system-wide issues with Learning@Griffith?

Section 3.8.5 of the Assessment Procedure for Students makes provisions for automatic extensions where service disruptions or outages prevent you from submitting an assessment.

I am having problems with my online exam. What can I do?

If you are having problems with a proctored online exam, see our ProctorU Troubleshooting page. You may also find the ProctorU Frequently asked questions useful.

If you are having problems with your (non-proctored) online exam, please try the following:

What if I hand in my assignment late?

If you submit an assessment item after the due time on the due date, without an approved extension, it will be penalised. The standard penalty is five percent of the total weighted mark for the assessment item, for each calendar day the item is late. Assessment items submitted more than seven calendar days after the due date will be awarded zero marks.

This is outlined in Section 3.5.2 of the Assessment Procedure for Students.

What if I submit to the wrong course?

Unfortunately, submitted papers cannot be deleted without approval from the Course Convenor. They may contact the IT Service Centre if they require any further technical information, advice or assistance.

How do I apply for an extension on an assessment?

An extension of time applies to assessment items undertaken and submitted outside of scheduled class time (e.g. an assignment).

If you are applying for an assignment extension, your application must be submitted using the online application form by the due date.

For individual assessment items, supporting documentation is not required for extensions up to and including 3 calendar days, unless you are enrolled in a course through Open Universities Australia (OUA)*. For group assessment, all OUA assessment and extensions greater than 3 calendar days your application must include appropriate documentation to support the grounds on which you are requesting your extension.

Students registered with Student Disability and Accessibility can apply for an extension on disability grounds for up to and including 10 calendar days without the requirement to provide supporting documentation.

*Note, for students that are not registered with Student Disability and Accessibility, accumulation of more than 3 approved extensions for individual assignments of 3 or less calendar days will trigger the supporting documentation requirement for the remainder of the trimester after which the count will be reset.

You can make a request for an extension of time on one of the following grounds:

  • medical
  • disability
  • bereavement
  • personal safety grounds
  • other personal, professional or exceptional circumstances (e.g. family or personal circumstances, employment-related circumstances, unavoidable commitments).

To apply

  1. Navigate to the Assessment Application Landing page in myGriffith.
  2. Make the appropriate selection for your circumstances.
  3. Complete the application form.
  4. If required, attach appropriate documentary evidence to support your application.
  5. Track your application after submitting.

How do I apply for a deferred assessment?

You may apply for a deferred assessment if you were prevented from performing an assessment item, such as an exam or presentation, scheduled for a particular date. Applications for deferred assessment must be submitted no later than three calendar days after the assessment date.

You can request a deferred assessment on one of the following grounds:

  • illness
  • accident
  • disability
  • bereavement
  • technical issues
  • unavoidable work commitments
  • sporting or cultural commitments at state, national or international level
  • other personal compassionate circumstances

*Please note, employment related reasons will not usually be accepted as grounds for deferment, unless you are experiencing financial hardship, have been refused leave, or directed to undertake unusual or extraordinary duties that where beyond your control.

If you are applying for a deferral for a ProctorU exam due to technical difficulties, you may not be eligible if you have not completed ProctorU Practice Test beforehand.

To apply

  1. Navigate to the Assessment Application Landing page in myGriffith.
  2. Make the appropriate selection for your circumstances.
  3. Complete the application form.
  4. Attach appropriate documentary evidence to support your application.
  5. Track your application after submitting.

How do I apply for special consideration?

If you have attempted an assessment item and your performance was seriously impacted or you were seriously disadvantaged, you may apply for special consideration. Special consideration does not apply to any re-attempted or re-submitted assessment item. Applications for special consideration must be submitted no later than three calendar days after the date the assessment item was submitted or after the date of the exam.

Possible outcomes:

  • application approved and marks adjusted (may not always result in a change of grade)
  • application approved and a final grade recommended based on your performance across the course
  • application approved including opportunity to provide another assessment task
  • application declined

To apply

  1. Navigate to the Assessment Application Landing page in myGriffith.
  2. Make the appropriate selection for your circumstances.
  3. Complete the application form.
  4. Attach appropriate documentary evidence to support your application.
  5. Track your application after submitting.

Can HDR Students run their thesis through Turnitin?

Unfortunately, no.

Previously we had an organisation in Blackboard that we would manually enrol HDR students into on request. This organisation has since been decommissioned and we can no longer provide this service.

All HDR students are enrolled into course sites. If they would like to access Turnitin, they will need to contact the Griffith Graduate Research School (GGRS). They have the access and authority to create a Draft Turnitin Submission point in one of these course sites if they decide it is appropriate.
