Grounds for exclusion

Griffith students can be excluded from the University for poor academic performance. You may face exclusion if you either:

  • fail the same course three times
  • fail a designated course that was a requirement of your program
  • have a program GPA of less than 3.5 and at least one previous Orange academic progress status within your current program.

If you're facing exclusion, the University will let you know.

Academic Progress Procedure

Implications of exclusion

At Griffith, a period of exclusion is  two standard trimesters or nine calendar months (whichever is longer) from the date of your notification. Note, Trimester 3 does not count towards the serving of an exclusion period.

During an exclusion period, you won’t be able to:

  • recommence study or attend classes in your current program
  • undertake another Griffith University program
  • study non-award courses via Griffith University or Open Universities Australia.

The exclusion will also be recorded on your Unofficial Academic Transcript and be retained for five years after you have either graduated or terminated your enrolment with the University.

If you're an international student, being excluded from University can also impact your student visa. Please make an appointment with the International Student Advisory right away to discuss your options if you're an international student facing exclusion.

Requesting a review or appeal

If you think your exclusion is unreasonable, you can seek a review of the decision. The review request must be submitted within 10 working days from the date of your exclusion notice email.

Firstly, speak with your Program Director to fully understand the decision behind your exclusion. Afterwards, if you still believe you have been wrongly excluded, you can request an official review. You will be contacted as soon as possible regarding the review outcome.

If you are unsatisfied with the outcome of the review, you can submit an appeal.

The student review and appeals website details this process.

Recommencing study

Once you've served your exclusion period of two standard trimesters or nine calendar months (whichever is longer), you may recommence study at Griffith.

You won't be able to automatically return to your studies; you must either apply for readmission into your current program or apply to study a new program.

An application may be lodged before the exclusion period has elapsed to meet University or other closing dates, but you will not be able to recommence your studies until the period of exclusion has elapsed.

Applications are not automatically approved. Factors such as your changed circumstances, maturity and motivation will be considered along with your application.

Readmission to Queensland Conservatorium

If you're seeking readmission to a Queensland Conservatorium program, you may need to submit your application sooner.

To recommence study in Trimester 1, submit your application by the first week of August of the previous year.

To recommence study in Trimester 2, submit your application at least three months before to the commencement of Trimester 2.

You may also need to perform an audition as part of the application process.
