Griffith Sport is committed to providing an inclusive environment in all our facilities, programs and events for a Diversity of Gender, Bodies and Sexualities. We have our Griffith Sports pride strategy that drives  our actions, and are a member of Pride in Sport, annually participating in index benchmarking.

Griffith Sport supports a diverse and inclusive student and staff community and is committed to the inclusion of those who are sexually diverse and have diverse gender identities, including but not limited to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex , Queer and Asexual.  As the primary agent for the delivery of sport, fitness, events, health and wellbeing on campus, Griffith Sport values inclusion in all our service delivery. A commitment to inclusion not only reflects our core values but also reflects the diversity of our students, staff and local community.

Griffith Sport firmly believes a strong sense of belonging should be accessible to everyone, no matter their sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, intersex status, ability, skill, cultural background, ethnicity, location, religious or political beliefs, and life stage. There is a place for you at Griffith Sport, exactly as you are.

GRIFFITH PRIDE IN SPORT STRATEGIC PLAN

As part of our wider Griffith Sport strategy, we are invested in the commitment of the "Griffith Sport Pride" strategy through the following four strategic priority areas:

  1. Communication - To clearly and effectively communicate our support of LGBTIQA+ inclusion within sport.
  2. Partnerships & Engagement - To engage with our LGBTIQA+ Griffith University & external communities to develop strong partnerships focused on representation and advocacy.
  3. Policies - To develop clearly written policies that support LGBTIQA+ inclusion that are easily accessible and communicated with our stakeholders.
  4. Environment - To deliver safe and inclusive service provision for all individuals regardless of race, gender, sexuality, culture or physical ability

WE ARE A SAFE SPACE

Griffith Sport is committed to supporting a safe environment for all who are participating in our events, programs and facilities. We aim to promote safe environments through our "Safe Space"  stickers which are visible at all 16 of our sport facilities.

We have a zero-tolerance approach to any form of discrimination, bullying, harassment, or vilification of LGBTQIA+ people. Homophobia, biphobia, intersexism, and transphobia are not tolerated within our sport programs, activities and facilities.

The Griffith Sport Code of Behaviour applies to everyone who works, plays or engages with Griffith Sport. It sets a clear and consistent standard of behaviour that ensures we create and promote environments that visibly welcoming and inclusive of LGBTIQA+ people. It also outlines the process for reporting and the consequences for those who breach of the code of behaviour.

OUR COMMITMENT TO LGBTQIA+ IN SPORT

  • We have updated our existing Griffith Sport guidelines to be more inclusive
  • We are consistently reviewing our existing policies, documents and strategies and will update this  page as applicable
  • We have been a Pride in Sport Member since 2021 and participate in PSI benchmarking. We are currently committed to developing an internal strategy to increase our score.
  • All full-time Griffith Sport staff have undertaken Pride in Sport training and are currently in the process of  rolling this out for casual staff
  • Griffith Sport Managers have undertaken Griffith University Ally training and will be visible wearing our new Griffith Sport Ally badges on campus
  • We support the inclusion and participation of individuals in sport competitions which best reflect their gender identity
  • Focused on developing partnerships with student and community organisations to enable participation from LGBTQIA+ communities
  • We have zero tolerance for abuse to any form of bullying, harassment or vilification of people with diverse sexuality and/or gender. Homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and interphobia are not accepted within our facilities and sport programs

GRIFFITH SPORT PRIDE WEEK

The What’s on at Griffith team will be hosting Pride Week from 8th – 12th May, 2023 (Week 9).

Pride Week will include a range of workshops, entertainment, activities and support services at South Bank, Mt Gravatt, Nathan & Logan campuses along with an online quiz show.

We will also be running Pride Round in Social Sport (further information to come soon).

Pride Week provides the opportunity for students to advocate for and stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ people and their allies. Explore the range of fun activities, workshops, entertainment, and support services celebrating and promoting the value of diversity and inclusion within the University and wider community.

GRIFFITH PRIDE RESOURCES & IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Griffith Sport Code of Behaviour-  This document sets a standard for the inclusion of LGBTIAQ+ people in Griffith Sport activities, programs and events that allow them to participate as their true and authentic selves. We hold all participants,  spectators &  guests to our code of conduct which explains our principles, standards, and moral and ethical expectations as they interact with Griffith Sport. This also provides a guide that explains key terms and offers examples of language that can help us build safer, more inclusive environments for trans and gender-diverse communities.
  • Internal Counselling and Support at Griffith - The counsellors at the Griffith Counselling and Wellbeing service provide a service that is free of judgement and encourages a safe, confidential and supportive environment.
  • ACON Counselling and Support - ACON provide confidential fee-based short-term counselling (up to 12 sessions) for LGBTI people seeking support in relation to their mental health and wellbeing.
  • Griffith Rainbow Society -  This is an inclusive Griffith University club, welcoming all sex, gender, and sexuality-diverse students, non-students, and allies.
  • The Griffith Ally Network - The Griffith Ally Network comprises Griffith staff and students who support and affirm the experiences of people who identify as LGBTIQ+ at Griffith. This network is led by the Griffith Pride Committee
  • LGBTIAQ+ Inclusion at Griffith - Griffith University is committed to providing an inclusive environment for a Diversity of Gender, Bodies and Sexualities.
  • Pride in Sport - Pride in Sport is a national not-for-profit sporting inclusion program specifically designed to assist sporting organisations of all levels with the inclusion of employees, athletes, coaches, volunteers and spectators with diverse sexualities and genders. The world-first Pride in Sport Index (PSI) benchmarks and assesses the inclusion of LGBTQ people across all sporting contexts.
