What is N82 and why is it being built?

To accommodate staff and students relocating from Mt Gravatt campus, a new 20,000sqm building will be developed adjacent to the arrivals area, on the current N13 site. N82 will be a flagship building contributing to the future vision of the Nathan campus to create a lively and engaging campus that embodies Griffith’s core principles and values.

Who will occupy N82?

The new building will accommodate AEL and Health staff and students from Mt Gravatt campus which will close at the end of 2025.

Where will it be located?

N82 is proposed to be built on the current site of N13, which will be decanted into various existing buildings across the campus plus a new technical annexe before being demolished.

What will happen to the current occupants of N13 (the proposed site for N82)?

For N82 to be built, the current occupants and equipment in the N13 building will be accommodated elsewhere. A series of upgrade activities – known as the Science Enabling Works program – will be undertaken to ensure staff, labs and other research spaces can be accommodated.

These works include:

• Refurbishments in N79, N34, N44, and N55
• Development of a technical annexe on current site of N45
• Development of a new chiller plant N80 across the road from the Unibar

What is the timeframe for the construction of N82?

Construction is set to start in mid-2023, for completion in 2025, and teaching from the beginning of 2026.

When will the Science Enabling Works program be completed?

The Science Enabling Works program is underway and will be completed by mid-2022.

What is the governance structure for the project?

The governance structure for the project is comprised of Advisory Groups, Program Delivery Groups, the Project Control Group, and the Council of Griffith University.

Who is the architect?

BVN was appointed as the Architect and Lead Designer for the project in May 2021.

What features will N82 include?

The main design feature of the building is the introduction of a central outdoor atrium formed by a series of elevated terraces opening onto Johnson’s Path.

The ground level of the building will include space for new retail outlets, exhibition space for display of research and engagement with industry, formal and informal teaching spaces and lounge spaces for students, staff and the public/ or visitors to our campus.

The remainder of the building will integrate teaching spaces with research and staff accommodation encouraging cross-collaboration and engagement.

The expenditure on buildings is about investing now to achieve and maintain excellence in our teaching and research mission and providing an exceptional student and staff experience. Ultimately it is about our people, our community and the University’s long-term sustainability.

Will there be opportunities to contribute to the design of the building?

Our approach to creating the N82 building will be highly collaborative and involve consultation across the University to ensure the building meets the current and future needs of our students, staff and industry.

• For students, there will be opportunities for Work Integrated Learning, input into the design of spaces and contribution to the interim campus activation program.
• For staff, there will be opportunities to input into the design of teaching, learning and research spaces through the project groups or various consultation processes.
• For industry, there will be opportunities for input into the creation of physical spaces, partnerships with students, and industry engagement and partnership with Griffith through dedicated, flexible collaboration spaces.
