What infrastructure developments are planned for Logan campus?

In line with the University’s Strategic Plan 2020-2025 – Creating a future for all, Griffith is looking to create opportunities for industry partners to build their physical presence at Logan campus.

The University will collaborate with industry partners to create new leasing and partnership arrangements that maximise research and learning experiences - making the most of the surplus space on campus.

Why is Griffith opening up  Logan campus to industry partners?

Logan is a beautiful and accessible campus, but much of the land, space and facilities are underutilised.

In mid-2021 the University undertook a Highest and Best Use analysis to determine how to best utilise the surplus space and create a more dynamic and engaging on-campus experience.

Logan campus already plays a vital role in the local community and has established strong partnerships with other key institutions including the Logan hospital, TAFE, and Council. The University also has a successful history of industry partnerships with AEIOU Foundation, Logan Healthcare Centre and The Yunus Centre. Further opening up the campus to enable partners to build their physical presence at Logan will ensure we maximise our campus space and foster greater connection with industry, business partners, and the community.

What development opportunities are currently being considered?

The partnership with Ohana College is the first infrastructure development initiative for Logan campus in several years. The University is providing Ohana College with the physical space to build and operate their school under a 25-year Lease (plus a 15-year option) and Research Collaboration Agreement.

Will the University be selling or leasing land for new developments on campus?

The University intends to work with industry partners under various leasing and partnership arrangements that seek to maximise research and student learning experiences while simultaneously making the most of the surplus space on campus. In some circumstances, this may involve selling land, but this would only be in a limited number of cases and is not the preferred strategy.

What is Ohana College and what is the nature of Griffith’s relationship with them?

The University is providing Ohana College with the physical space (land) to fund, build, and operate a year 7 to 12 secondary school, accredited by the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board, under a 25-year Lease (plus a 15-year option) and Research Collaboration Agreement.

Why has Griffith entered this arrangement? What are the benefits of this partnership?

The University will host an onsite research centre at Ohana College, which will embed existing University research programs with a focus on health, social welfare, secondary education, and teacher education. There are also many opportunities for work-integrated learning (WIL) and placements for both the School of Education and Professional Studies and the Health group.

Where will the Ohana College be located?

The Ohana secondary school will be constructed near the front entry car park adjacent to the existing AEIOU centre.

What is the building size?

The Ohana secondary school will be built on a 7,500sqm site, including a total building area of 5,500sqm consisting of a two-level school and sufficient area for parking and outdoor space. The building will include general, flexible and specialist learning areas, and include general amenities. The building will be constructed in stages with Stage 1 totalling 2,564 m2.

What is the timeframe for construction of the Ohana secondary school?

Construction on Stage 1 is set to commence in the first quarter of 2022, with the first intake of students set for January 2023.

Will Griffith have any facilities in the Ohana secondary school building?

Yes, the University will host an onsite research centre at the Ohana secondary school, which will embed our existing research programs with a focus on health, social welfare, secondary education, and teacher education.

Will Griffith have any additional opportunities at the school?

The student experience will be enhanced through work-integrated learning and placement initiatives. Ohana College will provide placements for 15 – 20 students in the School of Education and Professional Studies.

• This will provide unique opportunities for preservice teachers to build their knowledge and understanding of the flexible/non-traditional schooling sector and gain practical experience in working with their students.
• Such skills are also relevant to the mainstream sector to assist in the retention of disengaged young people before they reach crisis point

There will also be a minimum of 50 placements per year in the Health group, inclusive of supervised placements, work-integrated learning and research opportunities.
