Accessibility

The Griffith University website is subject to the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. As part of our responsibility in this matter Griffith University has implemented measures and will continue to improve the accessibility of the corporate website.

Accessibility initiatives

The current website look and feel has introduced several new accessibility initiatives, including an accessibility toolbar.

Skip to content

The accessibility toolbar offers audiences using a screen reader the option to skip past repetitive navigation, and immediately hear the content of the website.

User preferences

This page gives the ability to choose a theme customised to audience needs allowing the University to simultaneously present content to users with conflicting disabilities (i.e. a high contrast presentation for users with visual impairment, and a low contrast presentation for users who suffer from eye strain).

The availability of features like User Preferences for accessing our web services demonstrates our commitment to equity and diversity and enhances our reputation for catering to the needs of students, staff, and our wider community.

Change text size

This option increases or decreases the preferred size of text on the page and is useful for users who strain to read text at the default size, but is also available for users who want smaller text for a more compact presentation.

Guidelines for accessibility

All Griffith websites are obligated to meet all Priority 1 and 2 checkpoints from the World Wide Web Consortiums Web content accessibility guidelines 1.0 .

To meet this target;

  1. Page templates have been created to enforce coding standards
  2. A set of standard cascading style sheets has been made for the presentation of content
  3. Content template documents have been authored to help content-co-ordinators ensure Griffith websites follow best practise for usability
  4. A Web style guide has been created for the Griffith web development community with guidelines on the use of navigation, text, images, flash, audio/video, document formats, metadata and XHTML markup
