Examine the challenges of politics and policy in the Pacific

Examining events and issues from elections to media freedom and beyond, we work to support those who are striving to improve governance and democratic culture in the region. We track major developments, such as the progress of decolonisation, and we provide informed commentary on politics, and policy at national, sub-regional, and regional levels.

Research highlights

Pacific Island Centre for Development Policy and Research

Pacific Islands Centre for Development Policy and Research (PICDPR), formerly known as the South Pacific Centre for Central Banking (SPCCB) was formed to bring together world-class economic and finance experts, with a clear aim to help build capacity for research and policy formulation at the central banks and other policymaking and research organisations in the Pacific region.

Unpacking PACER Plus negotiations

The Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations Plus (PACER Plus) is a trade treaty negotiation involving Australia, New Zealand and 16 Pacific Island countries between 2009-2017. Utilising a negotiation framework, the Griffith Asia Institute is conducting research into this negotiation to secure a greater understanding of international relations in the Pacific region and to gain insight into how negotiation strategy is used in complex negotiations.

Describing the negotiation process will create a mirror that reflects the fundamental nature of this eight-year project including the value and challenges this project conferred upon the entire region.

Focus on New Caledonia

We are pleased to provide a collection of resources that paint a detailed picture of the influences and issues that have informed referendums on independence from France since 2019 to support increased and deeper knowledge and understanding of the ongoing process towards decolonisation that is taking place in New Caledonia.
