Current research

Here are some samples of our current research projects that show the breadth and depth of our interdisciplinary research in governance and diplomacy.

International policy and tradecraft

Caitlin Byrne and Susan Harris Rimmer |  Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Diplomatic Academy

The international policy environment is more complex, turbulent and increasingly uncertain than ever before. This commercial research project is focused on delivering international policy and tradecraft skills to Australian government officials at the foundation and practitioner levels.  This project aims at building the skills and attributes necessary for the implementation of Australia’s foreign policy agenda and international engagement.

Filling in the GAPS: Identifying the success, opportunities, and prospects for diplomacy exchange

Caitlin Byrne and Clare Minahan  |  Commonwealth Sports Foundation

This project aims to identify and amplify the diplomatic opportunities presented by GAPS Program 2016-18 through the lens of sports diplomacy. Using the GAPS  experience as a case study, the proposed research will explore actual and potential diplomatic outcomes, generating insights for improved future practice while enhancing the legacy of the Commonwealth Games. The 2 year GAPS program for Oceania athletes and para-sport athletes and coaches, provided an important mode of athlete focused engagement, development, and support in the lead-up to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. With an emphasis on representation, dialogue and cooperation across cultural and traditional boundaries, the GAPS Program offers a unique, yet unexplored case study in sports diplomacy. Drawing on the Australian sports diplomacy strategy, Sports Diplomacy 2030, this project aims to explore and assess the extent to which the program contributed to sports diplomacy outcomes.

Climate Diplomacy

Caitlin Byrne,  Susan Harris Rimmer and Tess Newton Cain

This stream within the Climate Justice program of Griffith University’s Climate Action Beacon aims to equip policymakers and diplomats with practical insights that will enable them to understand and engage effectively with climate diplomacy practices and protocols in Australia and the Pacific. This will allow those working in this space to collaborate with a diverse range of state and non-state actors, while aligning national interests to a more ‘just’ set of climate outcomes that advance the principles of climate action.

Global health governance and security

Sara Davies |  Project led by Centre for Governance and Public Policy

This program focuses on the challenges, initiatives and agencies that have evolved to confront health issues threatening individual security, state stability, and exacerbating global inequalities. From the evolution of health diplomacy to the presumptive efficacy of health security, this program seeks to build evidence-based research evaluating the effective intersection of health with global governance.

The program examines a range of actors and regions where global health issues continue to pose challenges to equitable economic and political transformation.
