Information for International Baccalaureate (IB) students
Griffith welcomes applications from International Baccalaureate (IB) students. Whether you’ve been awarded an IB Diploma or IB Bilingual Diploma, or partially completed one, we have a range of pathways and policies to help you reach your study goals.
Guaranteed Admission Scheme
If you have an IB Score 33 or IB Score 28, you may be eligible for entry into a range of degrees through our Guaranteed Admission Scheme.
There’s no need to apply separately for the guarantee, and it will be automatically applied to your QTAC preferences if you’re eligible. You can find more details about the requirements for guaranteed admission into specific degrees through our degree finder.
Tertiary admissions rank for IB students
If you’ve been awarded an IB Diploma or IB Bilingual Diploma, you’ll be given a tertiary admissions rank based on your results. This rank, called the Combined Rank, is calculated for you by the local tertiary admissions centre, such as QTAC in Queensland or UAC in New South Wales.
As of November 2022, the process for calculating the Combined Rank changed to more accurately reflect IB graduates’ results. For more information, you can check the relevant pages on the QTAC and UAC websites.
International Baccalaureate Safety Net
While we strongly encourage all IB students who wish to attend university to complete their diploma and gain a tertiary selection rank, we understand that this will sometimes not be possible. To ensure such students are still able to pursue higher education at Griffith, we’ve instituted an IB Safety Net.
If you haven't graduated from your IB Diploma, you can apply for a place at Griffith through QTAC, with an admission score based on the study you’ve completed. There’s no need to apply separately to be considered for the IB Safety Net, and any eligible adjustments will also be automatically applied.
Students with 24 or more points
If you’ve earned 24 or more points in the IB but do not satisfy the requirements for award of a diploma due to insufficient points in three higher level (HL) subjects (12 points) or three standard level (SL) subjects (9 points), you will be assessed on the same schedule as applicants who’ve completed the IB Diploma. This schedule is available through QTAC.
Students with fewer than 24 points
If you’re not eligible for an IB diploma and have earned fewer than 24 points, your entry will be assessed through an internal process that assigns a ranking from 50.00 up to 80.00. These rankings are based on your aggregate scores in up to six IB Diploma subjects at either HL or SL. You must have completed a minimum of two IB subjects for this process.
Adjustment Factors
If you’ve completed an IB Diploma, you may also be eligible for adjustment factors when applying for various Griffith University undergraduate degrees. This can boost your selection rank and improve your chances of gaining a place in your preferred degree.
Griffith awards adjustment factors for the completion of specific subjects, for being a resident of particular regions and for students who’ve experienced circumstances that have negatively affected their studies (see the Educational Access Scheme). These adjustment factors are automatically applied to your rank.
Credit transfer
You may also be eligible for to transfer credit into a range of undergraduate degrees, depending on what subjects you undertook as part of your IB Diploma. For subjects to count, you’ll need to have achieved a passing grade. In total, you can receive credit equivalent to one full-time trimester of university study. Completion of specific IB Diploma subjects also awards credit for up to four of the eight first-year common courses in the Griffith Health Foundation Year, allowing you to fast-track your studies. This Foundation Year is the first year of a number of Griffith Health degrees across the Schools of Health Sciences and Social Work, Medicine and Dentistry, and Pharmacy and Medical Sciences.
