Education for SDGs in the wider community
Griffith University provides dedicated outreach and educational activities for the wider community, including alumni, local residents, and displaced people.
In 2024, Griffith University demonstrated its strong commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the wider community by delivering a range of educational outreach activities. Staff engaged alumni, local residents, and displaced people through on-campus wildlife surveys, glossy black cockatoo tracking, guided tours, and the sharing of data via iNaturalist and species reports. These efforts were complemented by public events such as the Koala Family Fun Day, LEAF Festival, and biodiversity book launches, which attracted thousands of in-person and online participants, boosting biodiversity awareness and sustainability. Eco-Ambassador training enhanced skills in koala identification, fire management, carbon analysis, and ecosystem monitoring, while talks, campaigns, and events like the Gold Coast Native Plants Sale and Botanical Bazaar reached even more people both on and off campus. Through these programs and significant social media engagement (social media interactions reached 576,200), Griffith staff have empowered the community to actively participate in sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
This series of case studies below showcases Griffith University’s diverse and impactful educational outreach initiatives for sustainability and biodiversity. From immersive EcoCentre programs and culturally responsive Māori and Pasifika engagement to practical repair cafés and innovative festivals, these examples highlight the university’s commitment to promoting conservation, lifelong learning and community involvement. Each initiative is designed to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), fostering collaboration between Griffith students, staff, with local residents, the wider community and partner organisations across South East Queensland. The following highlights provide insight into the breadth of Griffith’s outreach, encompassing everything from hands-on ecological experiences and citizen science to social marketing campaigns and resources for school gardens, offering inspiration and actionable pathways for positive environmental change.
