Accelerating just green energy transition in Asia
The Green Energy Network – Asia (GEN-A) is a network by and for regional decision-makers to accelerate the green energy transition in Asia.
GEN-A was announced in 2024. It is uniquely positioned to provide research, capacity building and member networking opportunities at the intersection of Asian economies dependent on external technology (e.g., from China) and international green finance. Within the network members share best practices on addressing key challenges in the green energy transition, for example
- Collaboration with Chinese developers
- Green Independent Power Producer (IPP) governance
- Green energy finance
- Fossil fuel asset retirement
GEN-A works collaboratively to address member needs with leading regional research institutions and think tanks supporting research and engagement. The network is led by Griffith Asia Institute.
Understanding China’s role in Asia’s green energy transition
China has become the main provider of green energy technologies and a main investor in regional energy through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Most regional players have worked with different Chinese private and state-owned companies to develop (green) energy assets.
GEN-A addresses this need by enhancing the capacity of Asian energy leaders in policy, finance, and business. The network facilitates a robust exchange of experiences, bridges knowledge gaps, and promotes informed policymaking through strategic collaborations with Chinese partners and other international players.

Facilitating regional capacity building
GEN-A enhances knowledge and competencies critical for effective engagement with China, including navigating both domestic and international business and political strategies. GEN-A adds value by assisting Asian leaders in:
- Identifying best practices and lessons learned for engaging China in green energy initiatives.
- Understanding China’s current priorities, policies, and processes for international green energy cooperation.
- Developing strategies to mitigate risks associated with green energy partnerships with China through international collaboration.
- Efficiently utilising Chinese funds to accelerate the energy transition while meeting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets.
Building a network of Asia green energy excellence
GEN-A hosts high-level network meetings inviting select participants to share experiences and learn from and with each other about successful cases of green energy transition.
