Student testimonial
I was honoured to be given the opportunity to complete an overseas internship in Tokyo, Japan as part of the GABI program in 2025. This internship was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had, and I am so glad I stepped outside of my comfort zone to apply for the opportunity. The knowledge learnt, skills developed and connections I made over the 6 weeks are invaluable to my career. I have always had a goal of working internationally, and this experience gave me a new perspective on what working outside of Australia is really like.
I was fortunate to work with Arkit Global as a marketing intern. Although I am not majoring in marketing, I was able to gain insightful knowledge and skills that are transferable to my career aspirations in sport management. The team at Arkit made me feel welcomed and made an effort to understand my goals so they could tailor tasks to my career aspirations. Outside of my internship, I was given the opportunity to participate in different networking events, including the celebration of Griffith alumni and 50 years of Griffith at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo. This event was one of the highlights of my experience as I got to network with Griffith alumni living and working in Japan.
I wouldn’t have been able to complete the internship without the support of the New Colombo Plan grant. Being a recipient of this grant lifted a heavy weight off my shoulders and allowed me to enjoy the experience without stressing about the cost.
For anyone thinking about doing an overseas internship, go for it. Younger me who was shy and reserved, would have never imagined doing something like this. Take that next step and put yourself forward. The experiences you gain and the people you meet in the GABI program are unforgettable.

The GABI Program gave me the opportunity to undertake an internship in Tokyo, Japan, at Ugajin International Law Firm. Participation in the program gave me real-world experience in the legal field on an international scale. I was fortunate to be able to visit the lawyer's association building, district courts and observe a Japanese trial! I had broadened my perspective of my field of study and gained insights into the cultural differences which impacted law. I had studied the law within Australia countless times during my degree, but I felt I lacked an international understanding of my field. The internship supplemented my degree and helped fill this gap.
My experience taught me about Japanese culture and business customs. I formed so many fond memories with my fellow interns and within my workplace. Alongside my friends, I was able to see the breathtaking site of Mount Fuji, pet the deer of Nara and experience the chaos of the trains in Japan. While my experience challenged me at times, I developed my independence and self-reliance while navigating a different culture, language and climate.
I received an NCP grant which significantly helped with funding my participation in the program. I wholly recommend applying to the GABI program, the small step of applying can take your life places you never envisioned yourself going.

Industry testimonial
During his internship with the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea, Griffith University student Tian Lane demonstrated maturity, adaptability and a strong willingness to learn. He approached his placement with genuine intellectual curiosity and an openness to feedback, which allowed him to develop steadily over the course of his time with us. Tian engaged thoughtfully with the work assigned to him and showed a clear interest in understanding not just the tasks themselves, but the broader organisational and business context in which we operate. He asked considered questions, sought clarification when needed, and showed initiative in expanding his knowledge beyond immediate requirements. This curiosity and desire to improve were consistent strengths throughout his internship.
A particularly notable quality was Tian’s strong social skills and pleasant demeanour. He integrated naturally into the team and built positive working relationships with colleagues. His professionalism in communication, combined with his approachable and respectful manner, made him a welcome presence in the workplace. He worked well in collaborative settings and demonstrated a strong sense of team fit. Like many interns at an early stage of their careers, Tian continues to benefit from further exposure to complex corporate environments and from refining attention to detail in high-paced settings. However, his positive attitude, adaptability and commitment to learning position him well for continued growth. Overall, Tian has shown himself to be a capable and motivated emerging professional. With continued experience and development, he has the potential to become a strong contributor in a corporate or organisational environment. The Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea was pleased to host Tian and appreciates both the opportunity to support his professional development and our ongoing collaboration with Griffith University.
