The Institute for Glycomics PhD Top-up Scholarships

The Institute for Glycomics is offering TWO PhD Top-up Scholarships in 2023, through generous philanthropic support. These Scholarships aim to provide additional financial support to exceptional PhD students who are pursuing their research in the field of cancer, infectious diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Scholarship details

Comprising over 200 research scientists, students and support staff, the Institute for Glycomics is a world leader in the discovery and development of next generation drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics for diseases of global impact.

Established in 2000, the Institute for Glycomics is one of Australia’s flagship multidisciplinary translational biomedical research institutes, based in the heart of Griffith University’s beautiful Gold Coast campus.

The Institute boasts state-of-the-art facilities combined with some of the world’s most outstanding researchers focused on glycomics, a constantly expanding field that explores the structural and functional properties of carbohydrates (or sugars) and their roles in disease.

The Institute’s research primarily targets identification, prevention and cures for cancers, infectious diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders, with a focus on translational research that has a positive impact on human health globally.

To be eligible for the PhD Top-Up Scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • The applicant must either be in the first 12 months of their PhD program or be commencing their PhD studies with the Institute for Glycomics in 2023
  • The applicant must be a recipient of either a Research Training Program Stipend or a Griffith University-funded PhD scholarship,
  • The applicant must be pursuing research relevant to cancer, infectious diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders,
  • The applicant must not be in receipt of any other Top-Up scholarship,
  • The applicant can be Domestic or International (with an appropriate visa to study in Australia, if international)
  • Preference will be given to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The top up scholarship has a value of $10,000 per student per annum, for up to 3 years full-time study. The scholarships are funded by a philanthropic donor.

  • A one-page statement addressing your suitability for the scholarship
  • A brief CV
  • Academic transcript
  • Letter confirming offer of a PhD Scholarship – Include a letter confirming your offer of a Research Training Program Stipend, or a Griffith University-funded PhD scholarship
  • Two supporting letters from academic or research professionals who can speak to your abilities and potential. It is advisable that at least one of the referees has direct knowledge of your laboratory and other skills.
