When to apply

For applicants from Australian institutions who are graduating in Trimester/Semester One this year, and wish to commence in Trimester Two, apply now to be considered for scholarship. Scholarship offers will be made in mid-September to start in October.

Applicants wishing to commence in Trimester One, 2021 should apply through the annual scholarship round  – see our key dates page.

Scholarships can help you reach your goal

PhD and research degree scholarships can cover tuition fees, overseas student health cover, living allowances paid as stipends and relocation allowances.

The majority of scholarships are awarded in the annual scholarship round which opens at the beginning of July. You can view the annual scholarship round closing dates on the key dates website.

Applications received at other times are considered on a case-by-case basis with scholarships awarded to high quality applicants. These include applicants from Australian institutions graduating in trimester / semester 1 who wish to commence in trimester 2.

Some scholarship opportunities will also be offered throughout the year for particular research areas. Please refer to the list of scholarships below for more details on individual scholarship opportunities.

There are additional scholarship schemes available to current candidates, including travel grants, completion assistance and publication assistance scholarships. Please refer to the list of scholarships below for more information.

How to apply

Australian Government Research Training Program

The Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) (in effect as of 1 January 2017) provides funding to Australian universities to support both domestic and international candidates undertaking a PhD or research degree program. Support provided may include tuition fee offsets, stipends and allowances.
