The Completion Assistance Postgraduate Research Scholarship (CAPRS) provides support to higher degree candidates who are at the writing-up stage of their candidature who have experienced delays to completion due to circumstances beyond their control.
At the time of application, applicants must lodge a completion plan that corresponds with the proposed scholarship start and end dates. The completion plan must include individual tasks to be completed and dates for completion.
The thesis must be submitted on or before the approved CAPRS expiry date.
How to apply
- Candidates wishing to apply for the CAPRS must complete and lodge the application form (with all candidate sections complete) via myGriffith>My program.

- have completed a minimum of 24 months equivalent full-time (EFT) enrolment; and
- will not be in receipt of any other full living allowance scholarship during the tenure of the scholarship; and

2.1 Funding
The scholarship is funded by the Griffith Graduate Research School. In the event that the candidate does not submit the thesis by the scholarship expiry date, 50% of the scholarship value will be borne by the candidate’s enrolling Element or Group. Where the candidate’s non-submission is a result of extenuating circumstances that are beyond their control, the Dean Griffith Graduate Research School will review on a case-by-case basis the Element or Group liability to contribute 50%.
2.2 Selection and Award
Applications will be considered by the Principal Supervisor, HDR Convenor, and Dean (Research). Applications that meet the criteria for CAPRS eligibility and are recommended by the Dean (Research) for award will be considered as per the process outlined in section 3.1 of the HDR Scholarship Procedure. CAPRS awards will be made by the HDR Scholarship Committee, or by the Chair (Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School), acting executively on behalf of the Committee.
Scholarships will be awarded to applicants who, in the opinion of the Committee, best meet the following selection criteria:
- Thesis progress at the time of application, including the likelihood of completion by the expiration date of the CAPRS as clearly demonstrated via a detailed completion plan that corresponds with the proposed scholarship start and end date.
- The nature and extent of delays to candidature as evidenced in the application. Impacts to candidature cited must be demonstrated to have been unforeseeable and outside of the candidate’s control. Cited impacts should be measured in days lost and should align with the requested CAPRS duration. Where a previous scholarship has been extended, the impacts cited in the CAPRS application must have occurred during the extension period of the previous scholarship. Note that reasons for delay relating to family/personal matters, medical reasons, and employment related factors will not be considered in a request for a CAPRS award, with the expectation that leave provision or an adjustment to study load are accessed in such circumstances.
- The strength of the recommendation from the supervisor, HDR Convenor, and Dean (Research).
- The duration of HDR candidature. Priority will be given to candidates where submission of the thesis will occur within three and a half years (EFT).
