An opportunity to enhance Service-learning and community engagement in higher education

We are pleased to announce that Griffith University will host a Service-learning Summit from 14-15 November 2019 at our Gold Coast campus.

The Summit will explore a range of topics within Service-learning and have a refreshing and innovative format that will ensure you gain maximum benefit from attending whether you are new to the concept of Service-learning or are looking for more of a masterclass experience. In line with the nature of Service-learning, we are planning to use social enterprises for catering and keep the cost for participants as low as possible.

Keynote speaker and workshop presenter, Dr Richard Kiely

Dr Richard Kiely currently serves as a senior fellow in the Office of Engagement Initiatives (OEI) in Cornell University’s Office of Engagement Initiatives.

In 2005, he was recognized nationally as a John Glenn Scholar in Service-Learning for his longitudinal research that led to the development of a transformative service-learning model (See Kiely, 2004, 2005, 2011). He served as the co-editor of the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning for two special sections on global service-learning (2014/2015) and recently completed a co-authored book Community-Based Global Learning: The Theory and Practice of Ethical Engagement at Home and Abroad (2018).

Dr Richard Kiely is the co-founder of a community-driven global service-learning (GSL) partnership in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, which will be entering its 25th year in 2019 and co-founder of globalsl.org, a multi-institutional hub supporting ethical global learning and community-campus partnerships.

Transport

Griffith University Gold Coast campus can be accessed via the G:link (light rail). The Griffith University Station G:link stop is a five minute walk from the conference rooms. The Summit will be held within the Business School building – G42.

G:link

G:link runs every 7-8 minutes between 7.00am - 7.00pm.

From Broadbeach South it is 30 minutes to the Gold Coast campus via G:link.

From Surfers Paradise North it is 20 minutes to the Gold Coast campus via G:link.

From Southport it is 10 minutes to the Gold Coast campus via G:link.

Go Explore Gold Coast cards

Go explore Gold Coast cards are an easy way of seeing the Gold Coast and offer visitors and tourists’ freedom,flexibility and value for money. Adult and child passes are available ($10 and $5) and allow travel on Gold Coast buses and trams for the day until 3.00am.

You can also purchase single trip paper tickets on the tram. The cost to travel from any station on the G:link, to any other station is $4.70 for an adult paper ticket. It is the same cost whether you travel for only one station or from one end of G:link to the other, as the ticketing system operates by transport zones.

From Coolangatta Airport

TransLink’s integrated network on the Gold Coast includes the G:link trams, Surfside Buslines and Queensland Rail.

Route 777 departs from Coolangatta airport with various stops:

  • Route 777 is a limited stop service, taking you to Broadbeach South tram station, where you can transfer on platform to the G:link for Surfers Paradise, Southport or other bus routes. Route 777 runs every 15 minutes from 7.00am to 7.00pm, seven days a week.
  • It is approx 30 minutes from Coolangatta airport to Broadbeach South Station via route 777.

Coolangatta - Gold Coast Translink Routes

The ‘Gold Coast go explore‘ pass is available from the Airport and is easy to use. The pass is $10 a day for unlimited bus and tram travel on the Gold Coast.

From Brisbane Airport

  • Take the Gold Coast train line to Helensvale station where you can change to G:link.
  • The train leaves every 30 minutes. It is approximately 1hr and 40 minutes to Helensvale train station from Brisbane airport.
  • From Helensvale train station it is approximately 15 minutes to the Gold Coast campus on G:link and a further 5 minutes walk to the conference rooms. G:link departs every 8 minutes between 7.00am and 7.00pm.
