MMFF Pre-Conference Keynote Address

The Melanesia Media Freedom Forum was developed in response to the increasing media repression in Melanesia and to future-proof press freedom, though trans-national regional co-operation and knowledge-sharing among Melanesian media practitioners and scholars.

The Melanesia Media Freedom Forum in partnership with Pacific Journalism Review and Pacific Media Watch, will be presenting a pre - conference keynote address hosted by Professor David Robie.

Keynote Speaker, Professor David Robie

Professor David Robie is the Director of the Pacific Media Centre and a journalist of more than 40 years, covering the Asia-pacific region for more than two decades from conflicts to environmental and developmental issues.

Professor Robie is also the editor of the Pacific Journalism Review, the only research journal to investigate media issues in the South Pacific, Asia Pacific, Australia and New Zealand. As the Director of the Pacific Media Centre, Professor Robie manages the Pacific Media Watch, a digital research of daily dispatches about Pacific journalism and media. ethics and professionalism, and jointly publishes the high-profile independent Asia Pacific Report with industry partner ForeignPolicy.nz.

Professor David Robie is also a published author and has been awarded the 2015 AMIC Asia Communication Award in Dubai, the first person in Australasia to receive this honor. Among his notable achievements include:

  • Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award – 2011
  • The PIMA Media Freedom Award (for his contribution to development of journalists in New Zealand and the Pacific) – 2005
  • NZ Media Prize (for his coverage of the Rainbow Warrior bombing) – 1985 1988 Qantas Awards for best feature article and best feature portfolio for his Asia-Pacific journalism.
