Program Structure

Module 1: PEOPLE AT WORK

Throughout this module we examine a range of topics that provide the students with a sound basis in industrial relations and people management. This includes a brief historical consideration of the evolution of industrial relations in Australia, the complexities of managing people within workplaces and the rights, roles, and responsibilities of employees and managers.

By the end of this module participants will have:

  • a knowledge of the history of industrial relations in Australia and specifically medical unions including ASMOF
  • an understanding of basic theories of people at work; theories of motivation; theories of learning.

Module 2: THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK

Industrial relations can be seen as the regulation of work and is contained within a sometimes complex legal framework. Throughout module two students develop an understanding of the below industrial agreements, how to interpret such agreements, and their connection with each other.

  • Certified Agreements
  • Legislation (State and Federal)

By the end of this module participants will have:

  • a knowledge of the industrial relations legislation within which they work.
  • an appreciation for the different aspects of legislation that are relevant to their employment (and indeed, to individuals employed by participants).

Module 3: OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY

While all workplaces are covered by work health and safety legislation, there are factors that are specific to the medical profession. Throughout this module students will learn the relationship between the state and federal legislation, their roles and responsibilities, and the importance of consultation and training in the workplace.

Participants will also examine issues that relate to the introduction of controls into the workplace to protect employees (and others) and how this can be accomplished.

By the end of this module participants will have:

  • an understanding of the effects and human cost of occupational disease and injury and occupational rehabilitation.
  • a knowledge of relevant occupational health and safety law.
  • an understanding of workers compensation and negligence.

Module 4: NEGOTIATION AND DISPUTE RESOLUTION

This topic examines negotiation and dispute resolution from a number of perspectives, for example, understanding the differences between disagreements and disputes, the differences between managerial prerogative and bullying, and when to escalate workplace disputes.

Participants will learn about strategies to ensure interest-based bargaining and problem solving, and how to deal with employee performance issues.

A focus will be on dispute resolution at the point of the dispute to avoid escalating matters unnecessarily to the industrial commission (QIRC).

By the end of this module participants will have:

  • an understanding of different approaches to negotiation.
  • an understanding of the fundamental principles of interest-based bargaining.
  • knowledge of power and influence in negotiations.
  • Successful outcomes while maintaining relationships.

The Program

The program aims to upskill early, mid, and late career professionals with the skills required to efficiently navigate the industrial landscape within which they function. This program will serve to provide medical doctors with an introduction to industrial relations, occupational health and safety, dispute resolution and negotiations.

The program comprises online modules and 4 face-to-face workshops which will be delivered at the Griffith University Southbank campus. After registration, access will be granted for students to complete portions of the course online through Griffith University's online learning platform, however attendance at compulsory face-to-face workshops will be a necessary requisite for successful completion of the respective modules.

The program is specifically designed for, and in collaboration with, The Doctors’ Union Queensland (ASMOFQ), The Australian Medical Association Queensland (AMAQ), and the Department of Health.

  • Doctors seeking to improve their knowledge of employment structures;
  • Junior doctors aiming to understand their rights, entitlements, and progression through various employment modalities;
  • Mid-career, and senior doctors seeking to understand changes in their existing employment structures;
  • Medical managers actively seeking to better understand the industrial frameworks, and how to apply these in an equitable and appropriate manner;
  • Doctors seeking to locally champion work place rights, improve patient care, reduce fatigue and increase career longevity; and
  • Those seeking to take an active role within medical industrial relations, wanting to shape the future of how medical professionals are engaged and employed.

Credit Pathway

After the completion of this program participants will be eligible for CPD points from selected (approved) specialist medical colleges as well as a certificate of completion, digital badge, and 10CP in the Graduate Certificate in Employment Relations (ER), Graduate Diploma of Human Resource Management (HRM), or the Masters of HRM and ER offered at Griffith University.
