Industry-quality photography studios and darkrooms

The Photography studios are fundamental to the Queensland College of Art and Design. They serve to anchor students in photographic knowledge, cultures, thinking and practices.

The QCAD South Bank Photography studios consist of two specialty spaces, including three fully-equipped photographic studios and two darkrooms.

The Photography studios are fitted out with the world’s leading brands in photographic studio lighting, computers and software and have been designed to facilitate large group projects as well as individual practice. The studios are used as a core teaching space for undergraduate students where academics, alumni and industry are regular contributors to student learning and engagement.

The second studio space, the darkrooms, are fundamental to the student experience of photography at QCAD . Used as the entry point for all Bachelor of Visual Art first-year students and their introduction to photography, the darkrooms consist of black and white printing, as well as black and white and colour film processing facilities and several wet areas used for experimental processes.

The Photography studios and darkrooms are practice-led learning environments that encourage experimentation while harnessing techniques and skills through a divergent approach to thinking and knowing. These premiere studio-based learning environments encourage peer-to-peer learning between undergraduate and postgraduate students and facilitate workshops and student opportunities from alumni and local and interstate photographic artists.

As part of the photography studio and darkroom processes, QCAD also offers a digital lab (Liveimage) where students can scan negatives and photographic or other prints, work on digital files in creative software and output archival exhibition quality photographic prints.
