Stitching as Registration: labouring over maternal care

Whilst conducting an artistic practice in the home I am constantly manoeuvring to balance the workload of motherhood and artist. This project seeks to respond to the inquiry: How can stitching as a contemporary textile practice register the unseen labour and time of mothering?

In response to this question, three monumental, stitched artworks were created which record the unseen labour of life as a mother and artist. The labours of the home are rendered in an intricate, embroidered artwork that tallies these efforts onto large-scale fabric substrates composed of reclaimed antique cotton pillowcases and vintage cotton threads. Conducted around the kitchen table, my artistic practice occurs between, around and after mothering duties.

My research has been guided by the theoretical frameworks of first and second wave feminism, matricentric feminism and the history of embroidery and samplers. Through my practice-led research, ways of subverting the stereotype of mother and artist have been examined, making visible the unseen labour of the mother. My work transcribes a mother’s laborious day into a textile artwork, made in a private domestic setting, for display in a public domain such as a gallery. This artwork honours and makes visible the unseen labour of mothers everywhere.

Keywords: Motherhood, textiles, labour, repetition, domestic setting, feminism.

This project explores the experience of the home and the crossover of space and place, being central to the occurrence of a liminal state, a temporality that is both space and place yet neither. Through the use of photography, the works abstract the familiarity of home and interpret it through an index of light and shadow and aim for the audience to reconsider their relationship to self and home.

Courses will be displayed on the website, as well as posters and trifold brochures in a personal exhibition.

Since I was born in China, I studied design and lived in Korea for 5 years, and I am studying for my second postgraduate course in Australia now. During my studies in Korea, my major was mainly in media design and visual communication design, which also included some graphic design studies. When I was studying Korean language, I discovered the uniqueness of this language. I once tried to bring Korean language into my design works to show its artistic sense. Therefore, these experiences made me think about exploring the relationship between culture and learning. As a researcher for this project, this has also prompted me to have a strong interest in how to integrate different cultures from all over the world into design education.

My work explores interactive lighting using biomimetic generative designs that showcase the dynamic patterns within nature. Natural patterns within controlled settings such as cymatics, inspire my designs and intrigues my enthusiasm for the physical patterns that evolve from the waves of sound. This allows me create generative designs where the brush is held by nature in itself.
