LOGAN CLOTHING LIBRARY SUPPORTING BRIGHTER FUTURES

What began as a simple idea to recycle clothing and support students has grown into a movement that’s changing lives. In just six months, the Griffith Clothing Library at Logan Campus has raised $2,500 for the Brighter Futures Scholarship Program.

Every $5 item purchased by staff and personal contributions to the library has gone directly into scholarships, proving that small actions can have a big impact. Students now know that every piece of clothing chosen helps open doors for one of their peers through the Brighter Futures program.

The Clothing Library, founded by Griffith student Sophie Nakamura and alumnus Louise Hauser, was created to tackle both the waste of fast fashion and the financial barriers students face when accessing clothing for placements, interviews, and everyday life. Since relocating to Logan Campus in November 2024, the Library has expanded to include professional attire, casual wear, and children’s clothing, ensuring all students, including those with families, can access what they need. The results have been extraordinary.

214 students have already visited, taking home more than 1,000 items of clothing and preventing 400 kilos of textiles – the equivalent of 40 large bin bags – from ending up in landfill. From graduates proudly walking across the stage to international students preparing for interviews, the Clothing Library has given students the confidence to thrive. Behind every story of a student finding the perfect outfit is another story of generosity.

Staff, alumni, and students continue to donate clothing, time, and support. One particularly moving donation came from a beloved social work academic who, before her passing, arranged for her wardrobe to be gifted to Logan students, leaving a lasting legacy. The Clothing Library has achieved so much so quickly – but its future depends on volunteers. Sorting and hanging clothes take many hands, and student and staff involvement is vital to keeping the doors open.

Anyone wishing to help keep this sustainable, student-led initiative alive can contact Sharon Paterson at s.paterson@griffith.edu.au. Together, we can provide more clothes, prevent more waste, and fund even more Brighter Futures Scholarships
