The PhD scholarship is available for candidates interested in commencing a project with The Hopkins Centre in 2023. The PhD project can be focused on any aspect of the broad topics related to the research programs below:

Evidence-based Practices and Community Supports:

  • Rehabilitation pathways and trajectories
  • Personalisation of care transitions and service delivery models across healthcare continuum
  • Person centred care and integrated care pertinent to a rehabilitation health care setting
  • Equitable access to rehabilitation services and support after discharge
  • Psychological distress and secondary health & mental health complications
  • Sustainable employment and workplace supports for participation in society

Enabling Technologies and Environments:

  • Positive environments for enrichment, accessibility and community participation
  • Co-design processes to deliver bespoke rehabilitation solutions
  • Safe, effective and accessible use of technology in rehabilitation
  • Participation with dignity in the community
  • Design environments and technologies on how people live and utilise supports
  • Generating new knowledge, processes and supportive systems for technology uptake in rehabilitation
  • Collaborative and inclusive approaches to technology design that build long-term user capability and useability
  • Design and modification of public spaces, neighbourhoods, and homes to enhance quality of life and independence
  • Improve people's capacity to access and negotiate their environments through improved urban design, mobility and public transport to enhance participation

Scholarship details

The Hopkins Centre: Research for Rehabilitation and Resilience supports applied research in an interdisciplinary research environment that brings clinicians, citizens, researchers, academics, and industry together to conduct research of relevance to brain injury, spinal cord injury, persistent pain and other chronic disabling conditions. The Hopkins Centre is a joint initiative of the Menzies Health Institute Queensland, Griffith University and Division of Rehabilitation, Metro South Health.

The Centre is now seeking expressions of interest from candidates with background qualifications relevant to rehabilitation and disability, who are interested in undertaking a PhD.

The selection of applicants for the award of higher degree research scholarships at Griffith University involves consideration of your academic merit and research background. To be successful within this role, you will have strong academic performance in health sciences, social science, health services research, health policy.

You will have evidence of a passion for disability and rehabilitation services, with a strong desire to undertake research in advancing knowledge and practice in rehabilitation service delivery, sustainable employment after injury, accessible inclusive technologies and enriching environments for independence.

  • Expressions of interest are welcome from domestic and international applicants.
  • Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete, a bachelors degree with honours equivalent to first class honours or a Masters degree (AQF Level 9) incorporating a significant research component of a standard comparable to a bachelor honours degree or be regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment in accordance with Schedule One of the HDR Scholarship Policy. International applicants should ensure that English Language Proficiency requirements for the program are met before formally applying. Applicants to research programs will need to show they meet:

  1. A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS (Academic) with no band score less than 6.0 OR
  2. A minimum score of 575 on the paper-based TOEFL including a score of no less than 5.0 on the TWE OR
  3. A score of 79 on the internet-based (iBT) TOEFL with no sub-score less than 19

The 2023 Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship has an annual stipend of $32,192 (indexed) for a period of up to three years of full-time study. Please see the GUPRS Conditions of Award for more information.
