Griffith University and Gold Coast Health partner to provide non-clinical internships for current students in disciplines including IT, business, humanities, tourism, law and commerce.

As tertiary partner of Gold Coast Health’s Learning Experience and Academic Placements (LEAP), Griffith provides its students with opportunities for work integrated learning that provide public sector experience at a vital civic institution.

Renee Clark, a Master of Health Services Management student at Griffith University, had already had a successful clinical career when she undertook her post graduate studies.

“This internship was a great opportunity to still be connected in with the clinical services, but to get some experience outside of that,” Ms Clark said.

“I think the most important thing is being open to all those opportunities because you never know where they are going to lead,” she added.

Griffith University’s Deputy Director Work Integrated Learning, Dr Geoff Carter said the interesting, exciting and innovative opportunities for students guarantee a positive experience with Gold Coast Health.

“My role at Griffith is to place the students and to ensure they have a positive employment and internship experience,” Mr Carter said.

“Everything we do is designed to develop employability and allow students to maximise their chances of getting a job at the end of their degree,” he said.

“Practical experience means employability.”

Chelsea Girvan, a Bachelor of Business and International Business student at Griffith University, completed a non-clinical internship with Gold Coast Health under the partnership, which she said solidified her ambition to work in the public service.

“On a day-to-day basis I worked with people from diverse backgrounds, interpreted and translated policy and helped implement strategic frameworks,” Ms Girvan said.

“I couldn’t recommend the experience more. It is a great environment to find your feet and figure out the young professional that you’d like to be,” she said.
