Researching today to change lives tomorrow

Research within Clinical Medicine is strongly patient focused. It seeks to understand the underlying mechanisms of disease and how this can lead to health benefits from novel treatments, improved healthcare management and prevention of disease.

Cancer Molecular Pathology

Lead researchers: Professor Alfred Lam MA and A/Prof Vinod Gopalan

Our Program is mediated by the Pathology Team in the School of Medicine and Dentistry, and aims to support the clinical community by contributing to research, clinical service, and education in Pathology.  The research focuses on genomic, classification, parthenogenesis, and therapies of cancer, as well as digital pathology and education research in pathology. The multidisciplinary research team has strong collaborations with national and international research centres in Asia-Pacific regions and Europe and more than 500 peer reviewed journal articles with impact factor and book chapters have been published by the team. The research team members, Professor Alfred Lam and Associate Professor Vinod Gopalan, are happy to collaborate with other research groups and to enhance training opportunities for young researchers.

Clinical Neuroscience

Lead researchers: Professor Simon Broadley, /Prof Arman Sabet - Gold Coast University Hospital, A/Prof Sandeep Bhuta - Gold Coast University Hospital, Dr Peter Bailey - Gold Coast University Hospital, Dr Gaurav Singh - Gold Coast University Hospital, Dr Simon Arnett, Ms Sofia Jimenez Sanchez

Our research team has interests covering stroke, migraine, Parkinson's disease, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis. Projects cover clinical trials, epidemiological studies, laboratory based immunological and genetic studies and imaging analysis. The team aims to learn more of the underlying mechanisms of neurological disease and then use this information to design clinical trials of novel therapies. A prime example of this approach is the demonstration of vitamin D deficiency being a risk factor for multiple sclerosis and then leading a national trial of vitamin D supplementation. The team maintains national and international collaborations and has been successful in attracting national competitive funding for several projects and currently supervises 8 PhD students.

Mucosal Infection and Immunology

Lead researchers: Professor Keith Grimwood, Dr Amanda Cox and Dr Nic West

Our group has an extensive research program studying infection, inflammatory immune responses and the microbiome in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts and the relationship of these responses to health and disease such as metabolic and allergic disease. New interventions are being explored to improve gut and respiratory health. Studies to further the understanding of microbial pathogenesis in the airways and middle ear are being undertaken. A systems biology analytical approach is used to identify immune determinants of health and disease.
