PhD Candidate

Joyce van der Mark is a doctoral candidate at Griffith University, researching police interviews with adult sexual assault complainants. Her dissertation explores the theoretical foundations and practical application of support behaviours in these interviews, using both quantitative and qualitative methods to develop evidence-based guidelines that enhance interviewer practice and improve outcomes for complainants.

Beyond her doctoral work, Joyce has conducted empirical research on cognitive biases in investigative decision-making (e.g., tunnel vision), the reliability of eyewitness accounts, and deception detection in forensic contexts.

With over 15 years of experience in public safety and criminal justice, Joyce began her career as a special investigating officer with the Dutch Police Force during her criminology studies. She later worked as a detective, conducting interviews with complainants, witnesses, and suspects. After graduating cum laude in Law (LLM) and Criminology (MSc), she joined the Dutch National Police’s International Intelligence Unit as a researcher.

In 2015, Joyce graduated summa cum laude in Legal Psychology and became a senior advisor to the Chief Public Prosecutor on Bonaire, also serving as a public prosecutor in Criminal Intelligence. As Chief of Staff, she advised the Island Governor on administrative and safety matters, liaised with Dutch ministers, and led implementation efforts at the local level.
In 2020, she founded RED. Forensic Consultancy, offering training in investigative interviewing and expert reports on statement reliability for the Dutch Criminal Justice System. As an NRGD-certified expert, she remains closely connected to investigative practice, ensuring her research has real-world impact.
