Griffith University Dental Admissions Process (GUDAP) Interviews: Candidate information for the Bachelor of Dental Health Science

Congratulations on being invited to interview for the Bachelor of Dental Health Science. We hope that your journey to becoming a successful future dental practitioner starts at Griffith.

You will receive an email with details of your interview around 14 November. Interviews will be held online on 23 November and 24 November. Interview times will take into account time zones where possible, including New Zealand and other overseas locations, however all interviews are scheduled in Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST – Queensland time). Please note changes to the date or time of your interview are not possible.

Please keep your mobile phone on hand on the day of the interview in case we have to contact you prior to the arranged time. Phones must be turned off during your interview.

As a commencing student, you will need to hold, or apply for, a Unique Student Identifier (USI) before census date. To create your USI or read more about it, visit the Australian Government's USI site.

Accepting your interview

Your completed and signed Confidentiality Agreement must be uploaded to your QTAC application no later than 11.59 pm Wednesday 18 October 2023 in order to respond and accept your interview invitation. If you do not respond by this time, your interview invitation will be withdrawn. You will not be sent reminders to respond, and late responses will not be accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear headphones during my interview?

Yes, there is no problem with you wearing headphones.

Are we allowed to have a timer on the screen?

Yes, but it is not necessary, the interviewers will be timing the scenarios.

Are we allowed to write down notes during the reading time?

No, your workspace must be clear of all documents, pens and paper.

Will we have all the same interviewers, or will we move between interviewers?

You will have the same two interviewers for all five scenarios.

When will I get my offer into the Bachelor of Dental Health Science?

Offers will be made by QTAC from 11 January 2024.

Will we be notified how many questions there are in a scenario before the questions begin?

No, the questions will flow from the scenario. The number of questions will also vary between scenarios.

Will the interviews be recorded?

No, and you should not record the interview.

Do we get to read the questions when we read the scenario?

No, you will read the scenario and then be asked the questions by the interviewer.

Will moderators be entering the ‘room’ during the interview?

No, no one will be entering the ‘meeting room’ during your interview.

Can I turn off my microphone while I am reading the scenario?

No, the interviewers will need to be able to see and hear that there is no one in the room with you.

I noticed that when I read my computer screen it appears as though I'm looking down as opposed to looking at the interviewer. Will this impact how our communication is viewed?

Eye contact is not something that is being assessed specifically as part of your communication skills. You can place a box or reams of paper to raise the height of the camera to eye level.

How do we address our interviewers? Are we allowed to ask for their names?

Your interviewers will introduce themselves at the beginning of the interview.

Is it possible to defer an offer, or only decline or accept?

You will not be able to defer your offer.

How many applicants are you interviewing?

We will be interviewing approximately 300 candidates.

How do I accept my interview offer?

You accept your invitation by completing and uploading your Confidentiality Agreement to your QTAC application. This must be done before 11.59pm on Wednesday 18 October.

What you will be asked at the interview

The interview process has been designed to assess suitability based on criteria agreed by the University to be important for success in the program and in subsequent dental practice. The qualities rated as desirable include: good communication skills; an empathetic and ethical approach; a reflective manner; problem-solving skills; as well as teamwork and decision making skills.

What you will not be asked at the interview

You will not be asked at interview about any issues that are irrelevant, or contrary to equal opportunity principles, for example:

  • age, religion, sexual preferences, race, nationality or ethnic origins
  • marital or family status; occupation of parents, or
  • physical disabilities, health issues or infectious diseases.

What you will require on the day

On the day of your interview, you will require:

  • a computer with a camera, microphone, and reliable internet connection
  • access to Microsoft Teams on your computer. Please ensure you are using Microsoft Teams in your web browser, not the standalone desktop app
  • appropriate current photo and signature-bearing ID such as a valid passport or current driver's license, a school ID (with photo) or a Proof of Age card
  • a quiet place where your interview will not be interrupted (no other people may be in the same room)
  • your mobile phone, turned off once you enter the interview.

If you have a medical condition, such as asthma or diabetes, please ensure you have any required medication on hand.

What if there is a disruption?

Once the interview process commences you cannot pause a scenario.
