Sheneike embodies resilience after overcoming several severe setbacks. The Brighter Futures Scholarship has given her much-needed financial relief and hope for the future.

Raised on a rural property near Kingaroy caring for rescue horses, Sheneike learned the weight of responsibility early and developed a deep sense of community. These values helped carry her through some of the most challenging years of her life.

Over the past few years, she’s grappled with serious challenges including a fire that affected her family home and a car accident that left her with serious health implications.

Sheneike’s injury still requires regular specialist treatment in Brisbane, a six-hour round trip. She juggles raising her kids—which included advocating for her daughter’s medical needs—working part-time and managing her chronic symptoms.

During everything, Sheneike has kept up with her Bachelor of Business studies, often working late into the night after caring for her family. “Resilience isn’t born in us,” she says. “It rises each time we choose to keep going with purpose, day by day.”

“Every single time I’ve been knocked down, I’ve had to choose to stand back up. My kids are watching and my community needs people who won’t give up.”

Her experiences have created a new purpose: to become a rural doctor, so families like hers don’t have to fight so hard for proper medical care. She hopes one day to run a rural General Practice, reducing the strain of long travel times that families can face.

But dreams don’t pay the bills. Switching to part-time work to fit in her study, left her family vulnerable to the rising cost-of-living. When her computer broke down—effectively ending her study—she felt the weight of everything she has been through catch up with her.

Applying for the Brighter Futures Scholarship felt like a long shot, but Sheneike applied anyway. “When I found out I’d been successful, I was shocked,” she says. “It didn’t feel real. I was just so grateful.”

The scholarship gave immediate and meaningful relief. She could repair her computer, buy a webcam to stay engaged in online classes, and pay for fuel for campus travel and for her six-hour commute to and from specialist appointments.

It had been a while since she felt some stability in her life. It was also a reminder that good things can still happen.

Sheneike is now preparing for the medical admissions exam GAMSAT and taking the first steps towards her dream of becoming a doctor.

“I want to thank all of the donors for believing in a student like me,” she says. “Your support didn’t just help me study, it also gave me hope.”
