When students graduate from Griffith University, they go out into the world not just to make it for themselves—but to make what they do truly matter.

The University’s Outstanding Alumni Awards recognise and acknowledge the diverse achievements of alumni, across their fields of endeavour and in their communities.

The awards are conducted on an annual basis, and are open to all graduates of Griffith University and its predecessor institutions.

Award categories

For the Outstanding Alumnus Award nominees must be considered an alumnus (see Terms and conditions for definition). Nominees must also have at least five (5) years’ work experience since the completion of their first Griffith University degree. Nominations will be assessed on alignment with the broad selection criteria outlined below:

  • Sustained remarkable success in, and contribution to, their chosen industry/profession, showcased through professional positions, professional standing and recognition, as well as through industry developments, publications, presentations etc.
  • Substantial contribution to the community at local, state, national or international levels. This may be part of employment in their chosen profession or, working as a volunteer in the charitable sector or in other ways.
  • Demonstrated attributes in alignment with the values of Griffith University as outlined in the 'Statement of Values and Commitments'.

The Outstanding Young Alumnus Award nominees must be considered an alumnus (see Terms and conditions for definition). Nominees will also be under 40 years old (on the due date of the nomination) with at least four (4) years’ work experience since the completion of their first Griffith University degree. Nominations will be assessed on alignment with the broad selection criteria outlined below:

  • Sustained remarkable success in, and contribution to, their chosen industry/profession, showcased through professional positions, professional standing and recognition, as well as through industry developments, publications, presentations etc.
  • Substantial contribution to the community at local, state, national or international levels. This may be part of employment in their chosen profession or, working as a volunteer in the charitable sector or in other ways.
  • Demonstrated attributes in alignment with the values of Griffith University as outlined in the 'Statement of Values and Commitments'.

For the Outstanding International Alumnus Award nominees must be considered an alumnus (see Terms and conditions for definition) and have at least five (5) years’ work experience since the completion of their first Griffith University degree. As a student they would have been enrolled as an international student. Nominations will be assessed on alignment with the broad selection criteria outlined below:

  • Sustained remarkable success in, and contribution to, their chosen industry/profession, showcased through professional positions, professional standing and recognition, as well as through industry developments, publications, presentations etc.
  • Substantial contribution to the community at local, state, national or international levels. This may be part of employment in their chosen profession or, working as a volunteer in the charitable sector or in other ways.
  • Demonstrated attributes in alignment with the values of Griffith University as outlined in the 'Statement of Values and Commitments'.

For the Outstanding First Peoples Alumnus Award nominees must be considered an alumnus (see Terms and conditions for definition) and have at least five (5) years’ work experience since the completion of their first Griffith University degree. Nominees must also be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Nominations will be assessed on alignment with the broad selection criteria outlined below:

  • Sustained remarkable success in, and contribution to, their chosen industry/profession, showcased through professional positions, professional standing and recognition, as well as through industry developments, publications, presentations etc.
  • Substantial contribution to the community at local, state, national or international levels. This may be part of employment in their chosen profession or, working as a volunteer in the charitable sector or in other ways.
  • Demonstrated attributes in alignment with the values of Griffith University as outlined in the 'Statement of Values and Commitments'.

Eligibility, nominations and ceremony

Award nominations are accepted from Griffith University staff, alumni and members of the community and are open to all graduates of Griffith University and its predecessor institutions.

Academic groups select their winners from each category. These winners go on to be finalists in the overall University awards.

Academic group winners, their guests and distinguished members of the Griffith community will be invited to attend the Outstanding Alumni Awards ceremony where their stories will be shared and overall Griffith University Outstanding Alumni winners announced.

All award nominees must meet eligibility and selection criteria requirements and adhere to the awards Terms and Conditions.

Key dates

The key dates for the 2023 Outstanding Alumni Awards are:

Nominations open: 13 February 2023 at 9 am

Nominations close: 2 April 2023 at 5 pm

Selection panel review period: 17 April onwards

Academic group winners announced: 29 June 2023

Awards presentation and overall University winners announced: 8 September 2023
