
Dr Carolyn Hastie SFHEA

Dr Carolyn Hastie is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Griffith University, based at the Gold Coast campus. She brings over 14 years of experience in higher education and a distinguished career in midwifery practice, education, and research. Carolyn is deeply committed to advancing student learning, fostering inclusive academic environments, and contributing to the strategic direction of the university.
A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Carolyn is recognised for her leadership in curriculum design, pedagogical innovation, and mentoring of academic colleagues. Her teaching philosophy is grounded in values-based, participatory education, with a strong emphasis on psychological safety, co-creation, and transformative learning. She has led the development of direct-entry midwifery programs and initiatives to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, contributing to more equitable and culturally safe education.
Carolyn’s scholarly contributions include over 40 peer-reviewed publications, textbook chapters, and a co-edited volume. Her doctoral research into teamwork and psychological safety is being embedded into curricula across disciplines and institutions. She has presented her work nationally and internationally, and her influence extends across education, practice, and policy.
Having served on the Board of the Australian College of Midwives, Carolyn continues to contribute to professional organisations and policy development. As a staff-elected member of the University Council, she is dedicated to representing staff perspectives, promoting academic excellence, and supporting Griffith’s mission to create meaningful impact through education, research, and engagement.
