Pathways to Medicine

If you're a high-achieving Year 12 student aiming for an ATAR 99+, we encourage you to apply for our Bachelor of Medical Science, a two-year intensive degree offered at the Gold Coast and Brisbane South (Nathan) campuses, which provides guaranteed admission (based on meeting GPA 5.5) into the Doctor of Medicine at Griffith University Gold Coast campus.

There are 30 places available in the Bachelor of Medical Science at the Gold Coast campus and 30 places available at Brisbane South (Nathan), making entry highly competitive.

If you do not gain admission to the Bachelor of Medical Science, you can still pursue the graduate entry pathway by completing an undergraduate degree before applying for entry to the Doctor of Medicine.

Bachelor of Medical Science eligibility and selection process

The ATAR threshold varies each year based on the quality of the applicant pool and may differ between campuses. For 2026, the minimum adjusted ATAR to receive an offer for the Bachelor of Medical Science at the Gold Coast campus was 99.90. However, not all applicants with an ATAR/rank 99.90 were made an offer. The UCAT ANZ Total Score was used as a second order differentiator. For the 2026 admissions cycle, a minimum UCAT ANZ Total Score of 2240 was used as a second order differentiator for the Gold Coast campus.

The minimum adjusted ATAR/Rank to which an offer was made for Brisbane South (Nathan) campus was 99.95. All applicants within this ATAR band were made an offer.

Between 2023–2025, the minimum ATAR to receive an offer has ranged from 99.80 to 99.90.

Use this as a guide when considering your application, and ensure you meet the following eligibility criteria:

• You're currently in Year 12 or completed Year 12 within the past year and haven’t undertaken tertiary study at diploma level or higher.
• You meet English language proficiency requirements.
• You’ve studied subjects aligned with the Bachelor of Medical Science Assumed knowledge: General English, Mathematical Methods, and one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. While Assumed knowledge is not assessable, these subjects will set you up for success in the program.
• Optional completion of the UCAT ANZ .

ATAR adjustment factors

Applicants may be eligible to receive up to 0.25 adjustments based on location, rurality, Educational Access Scheme (EAS), and/or the Elite Athlete Support Policy.

Any eligible adjustments are applied to your ATAR/Rank.

UCAT ANZ

UCAT ANZ is a two-hour online test assessing reasoning and problem-solving skills, and Griffith continues to use only Total Score (if available), which consists of the 3 cognitive subtests (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning) with Total Scores ranging from 900-2700.

While ATAR is the primary selection method for the Bachelor of Medical Science, UCAT ANZ scores are used for second-order ranking within ATAR bands. Applicants without a UCAT ANZ result will still be considered; however, ranked lower within their band. We therefore strongly recommend sitting the UCAT ANZ to strengthen your application for this highly competitive degree.

How to apply for the Bachelor of Medical Science

All domestic applications for the Bachelor of Medical Science are submitted via the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre ( QTAC ). You can’t apply directly to Griffith.

Transition to the Doctor of Medicine

Graduates of the Bachelor of Medical Science who achieve a GPA of 5.5 or higher are guaranteed admission into the Doctor of Medicine. This pathway does not require eligible candidates to sit the Graduate Medical School Admission Test (GAMSAT) or attend the Griffith University Multi Station Admissions Assessment (GUMSAA) interview. Medical Science students are informed about the transition arrangements during their degree.

You can pursue Griffith's Graduate Entry pathway by completing any undergraduate degree before applying for entry to the Doctor of Medicine (MD). We accept a wide range of qualifications for admission into the MD , including undergraduate bachelor degrees, Honours degrees, Masters degrees (coursework, mixed, or research-based) and PhD s.

Admission is considered highly competitive, so choosing a degree that interests you will provide the best chance to achieve strong academic results. We also recommend selecting a qualification that leads to a standalone career outcome while you work toward entry into medicine.

While all fields are accepted, these Griffith health degrees provide a strong foundation for the Doctor of Medicine:

• Bachelor of Biomedical Science
• Bachelor of Health Science
• Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science
• Bachelor of Pharmacy.

Your ‘key’ degree must be completed within the last 10 years. To ensure academic currency of your ‘key’ degree applicants can complete 1 year of passing study at Diploma level or higher. Applicants should also check when their qualification must be completed by. Please refer to GEMSAS Admissions Guide for when your qualification or ‘key’ degree must be completed by.

Note also, we don’t give preference to Griffith graduates.

Doctor of Medicine admission requirements

Graduate Entry applicants must:

• Sit the Graduate Medical School Admission Test (GAMSAT)
• Apply via the Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System (GEMSAS).
• Attend the Griffith University Multi Station Admissions Assessment (GUMSAA) interview, if invited.

The graduate entry process typically spans across two years, beginning with GAMSAT registration and ending with offers into the Doctor of Medicine for successful applicants.

This process applies to graduates and students in their final undergraduate year. You will sit GAMSAT before applying through GEMSAS for the Doctor of Medicine. Students progressing from the Bachelor of Medical Science at Griffith University or University of Sunshine Coast are eligible for direct admission to Doctor of Medicine and do not sit GAMSAT or attend GUMSAA .

Application process

Griffith supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students pursuing a medical career through the First Peoples Health Pathway (for Year 12 students) and the First Peoples Pathway to Medicine (for other applicants).

For Doctor of Medicine applicants, the First Peoples Pathway to Medicine offers a culturally appropriate interview and removes the need for GAMSAT and GUMSAA for applicants with a GPA of 5.0 or higher.

We recognise the important role healthcare providers play in rural and remote communities and the unique challenges rural students may face.

To be eligible, you must have lived in an Australian rural area for at least five consecutive years, or for 10 years cumulatively, since birth. This area needs to be defined using the 2019 Modified Monash Model (MM) as MM2 to MM7. You can check your MM status using the Health Workforce Locator and selecting the Modified Monash Model (2019) filter.

Provisional entry pathway for high-achieving school leavers

Eligible high-achieving rural students who meet the requirements and are assessed by QTAC as rural receive a 0.05 adjustment to their ATAR/Rank into the Bachelor of Medical Science.
