Themba Malumo, a second year Bachelor of Aviation student received a Students’ Future Fund scholarship in 2021, which lifted him up in many ways.

“The scholarship has been a tremendous help for me financially and helped me pay for essential bills, like rent and food. I don’t like to ask my family for support as they struggle at times.

Without the scholarship this year, I would have eaten less food, and my nutrition, along with my grades would have suffered,” Themba said.

Themba loves his degree and in the future would like to become a commercial pilot for Qantas.

He is also big on giving back when he can, with a desire to support the Royal Flying Doctors and Little Wings, an organisation that provides free transport for sick children.

In the meantime, he has applied for a role to mentor first year and other students in the degree, as he says, “it feels good to give back.”

Dr Guido Carim Junior (pictured to the right above), a senior lecturer in Aviation, has been supporting these scholarships since 2019. He recently met Themba at a donor event.

“I am passionate about anything involving aviation as well as helping Griffith students in need. It was a pleasure to meet and chat with Themba and hear just how much the scholarship has positively impacted him. I would encourage staff to join the Staff Giving Program, as it only takes a small contribution to make a difference in the lives of students in need, like Themba.”
