The Widening Participation Scholarships are for students who have experienced financial hardship and/or educational disadvantage that has impacted on their ability to achieve their full potential.

Scholarship details

To be eligible, you must:

  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, permanent humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen
  • be a domestic Griffith University undergraduate student (this includes school leavers and non-school leavers, commencing and continuing students)
  • demonstrate financial hardship and/or educational disadvantage
  • not have completed the requirements for an Australian bachelor award unless such an award is a pre-requisite to your undergraduate program of enrolment and there is no alternate pathway into that program.
  • be of good academic standing

Applicants in receipt of one of the following scholarships are ineligible for the Widening Participation Scholarships:

  • Centrelink Relocation Grants
  • Commonwealth Scholarship.

At the end of the Widening Participation Scholarship entitlement, the recipient may reapply for the scholarship and be treated as a new applicant.

Application assessment

Applicants are assessed on the following five categories:

  • financial hardship
  • home environment and responsibilities
  • English language difficulty
  • personal illness and disability
  • educational disruption.

Priority will be given to students who:

  • are not in receipt of any other scholarship funding
  • either demonstrate the potential for or have the proven ability for successful academic progression.

Applications must be completed and submitted by the closing date.

Value

The Widening Participation Accommodation Scholarship

Maximum value is $4,400, payable in instalments, over the current one calendar year only. Instalment amount is based on enrolled credit points per trimester, being $550 per 10 credit points, up to the maximum value of the scholarship or end of the current calendar year, whichever is the lesser.

The Widening Participation Education Costs Scholarship

Maximum value of $2,200, payable in instalments, over the current one calendar year only. Instalment amount is based on enrolled credit points per trimester, being $275 per 10 credit points, up to the maximum value of the scholarship or end of the current calendar year, whichever is the lesser.

Please note payments made during part-time study may be taxable.

Payment

Widening Participation Scholarship is payable into the recipient's nominated bank account. Payments are made after each enrolled trimester census subject to the recipient satisfying scholarships terms and conditions.

Sponsor details

These scholarships are sponsored by the Commonwealth Government.

The following conditions apply:

  • Awarding of a Widening Participation Scholarship is dependent on acceptance of an admission offer at Griffith University.
  • A scholarship recipient must accept the scholarship by the date indicated on the letter of offer, or the scholarship offer may be withdrawn and directed to another applicant.
  • To receive and retain the Widening Participation Scholarship benefit the scholarship recipient must remain enrolled at Griffith University in an undergraduate degree.
  • In exceptional circumstances, with the approval of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education), a student may receive more than one equity scholarship.
  • To retain a Widening Participation Scholarship, the recipient must remain in good academic standing. A student excluded from study under any University policy loses their scholarship.
  • Where the duration of the Widening Participation Scholarship benefit has not exceeded the maximum period, the scholarships recipient may use the balance of the scholarship for a Bachelor Honours Degree program.
  • A Widening Participation Scholarship recipient may not take leave of absence as funding is provided by the Commonwealth Government and cannot be guaranteed or rolled over to the next year.
  • A Widening Participation Scholarship recipient may change their degree program.
  • Widening Participation Scholarship recipients who are on approved cross-institutional study continue to remain eligible for scholarship benefits, however recipients are required to provide documentation to prove cross-institutional study and academic load. Scholarship recipients who undertake approved cross institutional study through Open Universities Australia and remain active as a Griffith student continue to remain eligible for scholarship benefits, however recipients are required to provide documentation to prove Open Universities Australia study and academic load. (OUA Non-Award courses are not eligible)

The above conditions are verified each trimester at census date. If a scholarship recipient fails to successfully meet these conditions, scholarship payments may be withheld, or the scholarship may be terminated.

Applicants may be shortlisted and be required to provide additional information.

Griffith University reserves the right to withdraw an advertised scholarship at any time.
