Support for musical theatre students who have experienced educational disadvantage

The Makan Family Scholarships are for commencing students in the Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre (QAEMT).  The scholarships will provide support to talented students who have experienced educational disadvantage and/or students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

Scholarship details

To be eligible, you must be:

  • an Australian citizen
  • commencing and full-time enrolled in the Bachelor of Musical Theatre in trimester 1 2024 by the closing date of this scholarship.
  • One or more of the following:
    • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and be able to provide a Confirmation of Heritage* or
    • demonstrate educational disadvantage based on a comprehensive assessment by the University

*You will be asked to provide a Confirmation of Heritage. Note: A letter of confirmation is usually obtained from an incorporated Indigenous organisation and stamped with their common seal.

Statements

  • Personal statements - max. 250 words, cover/to be used for - detailing what it would mean to receive this scholarship, how this scholarship will support your Musical Theatre studies, career goals and ambitions.
  • Challenges statement – Provide a statement detailing personal and financial circumstances that have the potential to impact your studies at Griffith University.
  • Supporting documentation: you must upload the following, please use only the following formats- pdf, word, jpeg or excel, we can only guarantee these formats will be accepted:
    • Confirmation of Heritage, such as a letter of confirmation obtained from an incorporated Indigenous organisation and stamped with their Common Seal.
  • Confirmation of financial hardship can be demonstrated by either being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment or a comprehensive assessment by the University.

Application Assessment

Information provided by individuals in their Griffith online scholarship application is assessed and ranked in accordance with the following Educational Disadvantage Assessment categories:

  1. Financial Hardship
  2. Home Environment and Responsibilities
  3. English Language Difficulty
  4. Personal Illness and Disability
  5. Educational Disruption
  6. Relocation within Australia.

Value

Maximum value of each scholarship is $30,000, payable in instalments.

Instalments of $5,000 are payable in trimester 1 and 2 provided conditions are met.

Payment

Payments are made up to six weeks after the census date, subject to satisfying scholarship terms and conditions.

To remain eligible for the scholarship, you will be required to:

  • remain full-time enrolled at Griffith University in the program for which the scholarship was awarded
  • maintain good academic progress at Griffith University.
  • maintain satisfactory progress during their course of study as advised by the QAEMT Executive.
  • agree to be approached by Griffith University to provide testimonials and quotes for promotional programs and external activities.

The above conditions are verified each trimester at census date. If a scholarship recipient fails to successfully meet these conditions, scholarship payments may be withheld, or the scholarship may be terminated. Recipients of this scholarship who withdraw from their studies in two consecutive trimesters will not be eligible to receive a scholarship payment in the subsequent trimester.

Applications, including any supporting documentation, must be completed and submitted by the closing date.

Griffith University reserves the right to withdraw an advertised scholarship at any time.
