Opportunities for elite athletes to pursue higher education

The Australian Olympic Committee and Griffith University Sports Scholarships will enable athletes who compete in an Olympic sport at an international level, to gain a higher qualification without forfeiting their sporting opportunities.

Full scholarship is valued at up to $40,000.

These scholarships are available to commencing and current Griffith students.

Scholarship details

To be eligible, you must:

  • be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or permanent humanitarian visa holder
  • be eligible for admission into, or currently enrolled in, any Griffith University undergraduate or postgraduate (by coursework) degree*
  • be competing at an international level in their chosen sport (must be an Olympic sport)
  • provide a referee report from your coach
  • provide a list of sporting achievements
  • not be a current Griffith University Sporting Excellence Scholarship recipient (full or development)

*Recipients studying through OUA will be eligible if they are enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in one of the following programs:

  • Bachelor of Applied Financial Advice
  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Business
  • Bachelor of Communication
  • Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice.

Statements

All statements you complete will be considered.

  • Personal statement: To give yourself the best chance, we recommend you complete the personal statement. In 500 words or less, outline your:
    • sporting achievements—either in this section or as an attachment (see supporting documentation section below)
  • Supporting documentation: You must upload the following in the supporting documentation (other) section:
    • A comprehensive date-ordered list (showing 2024 first in the list and going backwards, that is 2024, 2023, 2022, etc.) of your sporting achievements, including times and placing/ranking
    • Copies of your most outstanding sporting certificates/awards/copies of media articles that make you stand out in your chosen sport.

Cash benefit

Scholarship values may vary with full, 2-year, scholarships valued up to $40,000. (Actual value and instalment schedule will be advised at time of offer, instalments will be adjusted depending on the offer amount.) e.g. full scholarship with a maximum value of $40,000, would be payable in instalments of $2,500 per 10 Credit Points for each enrolled trimester that conditions are met, up to the maximum value of the scholarship.

The Griffith Sports Scholarships Selection Committee may choose to offer Development Scholarships to other strong applicants. The Development Scholarships will range in value between $5,000 and $10,000 payable over a year. Instalments will be adjusted depending on the offer amount. e.g. a scholarship of $5,000 would be payable in instalments of $625 per 10 Credit Points for each enrolled trimester that conditions are met, up to the maximum value of the scholarship.

Payments/instalments are made up to three weeks after the census date subject to satisfying scholarship terms and conditions. Please note, payments made whilst studying part-time may be taxable.

Membership of the Griffith Sports College

Recipients of Sports Excellence Scholarships are automatic members of the Griffith Sports College. Membership includes personal assistance and study assistance, as outlined in the Elite Athlete Support Policy.

Griffith is an elite-athlete friendly university and has a strong commitment to sport and the role it plays in a balanced educational environment. Griffith University, through the Griffith Sports College, assists elite athletes in sourcing flexible study means to enable them to continue performing at optimum level while studying.

To remain eligible for the scholarship, recipients will be required to:

  • continue to meet the eligibility requirements
  • remain enrolled at Griffith University
  • be enrolled in a minimum of 10 Credit
  • remain in good academic progress (GPA 3.5 or above); a student who is excluded from study under any University procedure loses their scholarship
  • maintain an appropriate status in their sport and submit sporting performance reports on a biannual basis
  • not be in receipt of another Griffith funded sporting scholarship

The above conditions are verified each trimester at census date. If a scholarship recipient fails to successfully meet these conditions, scholarship payments may be withheld, or the scholarship may be terminated.

Scholarship recipients:

  • may change their degree program without affecting their scholarship
  • cannot take a leave of absence and the offer for the scholarship cannot be deferred
  • who are not enrolled will lose their scholarship
  • are expected, on all possible occasions, to publicly acknowledge the support and assistance of the Sports Excellence Scholarship scheme
  • may be asked to participate in marketing and promotional material to represent the University and the AOC.

Applications, including referee reports and any supporting documentation, must be completed and submitted by the closing date.

Offers are made via email.

A person awarded a scholarship must accept the scholarship by the date indicated on the scholarship offer, or the scholarship offer will be withdrawn and directed to another applicant.

Applicants may be shortlisted and be required to provide additional information.

Griffith University reserves the right to withdraw an advertised scholarship at any time.

Partnership details

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has recognised Griffith University the Australian Olympic Pathway University nationally.

As a part of the partnership between Griffith and the AOC, we will be supporting Olympians and aspiring Olympians for 2028 and 2032 with a range of sporting scholarships.

These scholarships will support athletes in Olympic sports as they work towards their sporting and academic goals.
