Step 2: Approach organisation and develop a project plan
Approaching an organisation: Utilising your network, the contacts of your supervisor or staff within other academic areas within Griffith, contact an external organisation to pitch a research project idea. If you are having trouble finding a contact, see ‘Assistance Available’ below for alternative options and help staff contacts to assist you in finding a host organisation/project.
Internships can be paid or unpaid opportunities. When pitching to an external organisation please keep in mind any financial contribution that you may be seeking to undertake the project. This could include an internship stipend, travel funds or funds to support the project. These contributions may be funded by the external organisation and distributed by the University similar to a scholarship (internship stipends average $1,000 - $3,000 per month). Those on a current scholarship (RTP, GUPR or equivalent) will receive the payments as a top-up to the scholarship.
If you are seeking a financial contribution for your internship, please liaise with your supervisor to assist in the proposal to the external organisation (see project plan below).
You can find resume examples and other career planning resources which may help with approaching an organisation on the Careers and Employment website.
Project plan: Once you have identified your Host Organisation, and your eligibility to undertake an internship has been confirmed, your supervisor will provide you with the HDR Internship Project Plan template (available to them on the HDR Internship Forms page) which you should develop in conjunction with your Host Organisation.
If you have any queries or concerns, you and/or your supervisor can liaise with the Griffith Graduate Research School to discuss the potential internship opportunities, seek advice, or seek assistance with the above processes.
