Research that empowers communities and ecosystems
Across industry and governments, research leaders are being challenged to create sustainable, equitable and adaptable development for all, in the face of climate change.
Our research tackles this significant challenge by focusing on the intersection between human and natural systems. GIHER plays a critical role in evaluating and working within the macro systems—social, economic, cultural and political—that shape our future as humans.

Protecting and restoring resilient biodiversity and ecosystems
We conduct leading-edge transdisciplinary and transformative research that drives tangible improvement in the protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems, to ensure nature can recover and people can thrive.
Creating climate and disaster resilient communities
We will evaluate disaster risk reduction processes and systems, while developing tools and knowledge that informs resilient investment decisions and processes, to mitigate and recover from natural disasters and enhance governance processes with a particular focus on Digital and AI approaches. Our specific focus includes climate change and public health, modelling climate risks and priority investments.
Transitioning to climate resilient living and built environments
We will deliver viable, scalable and empirically-based solutions for a net-zero living and built environment that is equitable, just, health and adaptable to our climate-impacted environment. Our specific focus includes decarbonising the construction industry, safety and security of our built environment, climate adaptive industry readiness and circular economy ecosystems.
