Observation and Speculation: Drawing exhibition

This exhibition comprises a curated selection of outcomes of student work from the Drawing 1 course 2362QCAD.

This course is usually held at the Gold Coast campus of the Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University. In 2020, this course moved online as a result of COVID-19.

The drawing assignment asks that students choose a paragraph of text from a novel or poem and to 'elucidate' these texts. The word 'elucidate' is chosen rather than illustrate, because strict visual description, in a graphic sense is not asked for. This task is more about illumination rather than illustration. The drawings completed in response to the text should not be obvious or accurate recreations of the exact imagery described in the text. The chosen text is just the beginning.

The drawings can be abstract or surreal, and it is encouraged to craft images through imagination by using compositional experimentation, careful visual research and a considered approach to the use of the elements and principles of visual language and drawing strategies rehearsed in class.

Thank you to our students, for their dedication to their studies in the shift to online learning. And thank you to the teaching team of Shari Lyon and Dr Sonya Peters, who worked tirelessly to deliver this drawing course via distance learning with short notice. Their commitment to student success is commendable.
