Why is this study being conducted?
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects around 1 in 10 adults and occurs when the kidneys gradually lose their ability to function properly. Common causes include diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney inflammation and inherited conditions.
While current treatments can help slow the progression of CKD, many people with kidney problems continue to develop worsening of their kidney disease and/or heart problems.
This study is investigating a potential new treatment called BI 690517. Researchers aim to determine whether BI 690517, when used alongside empagliflozin every day, prevents worsening of kidney disease or deaths from heart disease in people who have kidney disease.
Who is eligible to participate in this study?
You may be eligible if you:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Have CKD and are at risk of kidney disease progression
Applicants who express interest in participating in this study will be reviewed and contacted as other requirement criteria must also be met.
What happens during the study?
Trial duration will be about 3-4 years. You will have 5 trial visits in the first 6 months and then a visit once every 6 months.
Trial site visits will occur at the Griffith University Clinical Trial Unit on the Gold Coast.
You will be assigned randomly to receive the study drug or placebo in addition to empagliflozin.
Volunteer to participate
Participation in this study is completely voluntary, and participants can decide to withdraw at any time.
Eligible participants will be reimbursed for their travel associated with each study visit.
