PhD Candidate

Jurel Yap is a PhD candidate at Griffith University's School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Previous to his PhD, he was a Program Manager and Statistician at the Ateneo Policy Center, School of Government, Ateneo de Manila University (Quezon City, Philippines).

His core research interests are in the intersection of quantitative methods and social science research, applied to geographical and survey data.

In addition to his doctoral research, Jurel has published articles on crime and punishment, political economy, political violence, youth, and misinformation, with a particular focus on the Philippines. His work has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Government and EconomicsEconomics of GovernanceAsian Journal of Comparative Politics, and the Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs.

Research Topic

Stunted by the prison cycle: the impact of high imprisonment on young people.

Jurel’s research investigates the impact of high local imprisonment rates on young people at the community level in Australia. He uses linked administrative datasets at a small geographical level to explore interesting relationships with data.
