GORDON HOOKEY:

Summoning Time, Painting & Politikill Transition in MURRILAND!

Gordon Hookey: Summoning Time. Painting & Politikill Transition in MURRILAND! explores the visual language of Waanji artist Hookey’s monumental painting project MURRILAND! (2015–ongoing), which re-envisions the history of Queensland from an Indigenous perspective. Hookey was one of just three Australian artists invited to participate in documenta14, the world’s biggest contemporary art event held every five years in Kassel, Germany, and for the first time in 2017, Athens, Greece. Dubbed the ‘art Olympics’, documenta attracts more than a million visitors over 100 days, including collectors, gallery and museum directors and international press.

The publication takes an in-depth look at Hookey’s inspiration and source materials, and includes essays by respected international voices, including Aboriginal historian Michael Aird, and former professor of Anthropology, Johannes Fabian. The book is a collaboration between Griffith University, exhibition platform Frontier Imaginaries, documenta14, and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, where Gordon exhibited his work in 2018.

A special launch event was held, Thursday 24 August 2017, to celebrate the launch of the two publciations D Harding: Body of Objects and Gordon Hookey: Summoning Time. Painting & Politikill Transition in MURRILAND!
