Recent graduate at the cutting-edge of AI

Bachelor of Computer Science

Griffith University alumnus Selina Schuh landed a graduate position at a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI), automation and analytics agency, Blackbook AI.

With offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Blackbook has a hundred-strong workforce offering consultancy services on the forefront of technology, providing solutions around robotics, predictive analytics, machine learning and more.

Bachelor of Computer Science alumnus Selina Schuh had never considered a future in computing or related fields but a lifelong love of maths and problem-solving drove Selina to enrol in the technical degree.

“I didn’t know what I was getting myself into,” Ms Schuh said.

“But I was excited by the challenge of learning something completely new to me,” she said.

Out of high school, the German national wasn’t sure what to study next and opted to take a gap year here in Australia. She would return to complete her undergraduate degree.

Ms Schuh immersed herself in life at Griffith, becoming employed as a Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) Leader for subjects Engineering Mathematics and Linear Algebra. Selina also became a mentor with the Student Equity Outreach team’s Uni-Reach program.

A gifted student, Ms Schuh was awarded the School of Information and Communication Technology’s Computer Science Award for the 2020 academic year – the prize for highest GPA in the Bachelor of Computer Science.

“I’ve always been passionate about studying and learning,” Ms Schuh said.

“I always strive to do my very best,” she said.

It will come as no surprise then that Selina nabbed the full-time gig at Blackbook just months after graduating.

“I am very excited to have started my first job as a consultant in the tech industry,” Ms Schuh said.

“I want to grow my skills in robotic process automation, data science and AI,” she said.

Ms Schuh jumped at the chance to work at Blackbook in part thanks to the company’s leading policies on diverse and inclusive hiring practices, for which it won Diversity Employer of the Year 2020 at the Women in Digital Awards.

“I am proud to be working for a company that values diversity and has a strong female representation in management,” Ms Schuh said.

“I love the team spirt and continuous support we provide each other,” she said.

Ms Schuh has hit the ground running both personally and professionally, with plans to compete in her first triathlon in September and a Half Ironman in 2022. Meanwhile at work, within just two weeks of starting at Blackbook, Selina successfully completed a UiPath certification as well as her first project.

“As Automation Engineer, I get to work on challenging projects with impressive clients, which allows me to meet interesting people every single day,” Ms Schuh said.

“Technology is everywhere and I believe it is one of the most exciting and innovative industries you can enter,” she said.

“The opportunities are endless – technology has something to offer for everyone.”

Ms Schuh said if it wasn’t for Griffith University’s industry networking, she never would have landed the internship that ultimately helped her secure the job she is now excelling in.

“Griffith had several networking nights where I connected with businesses and got internships with industry partners,” Ms Schuh said.

“The skills I learned at the internship, and during my degree, helped me land the job at Blackbook immediately after graduation,” she said.

“The only regret I have is not starting my own tech journey earlier.”
