Griffith alumnus’ start-up helps industry disrupters

Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of International Business

Joshua (Josh) Lumley says the opportunities he got at Griffith Business School helped him follow his passion for innovation, industry disruption and helping others.

Griffith Business School alumnus Josh Lumley is all about helping other businesses turn their dreams into a reality with his start-up research and development consultancy prmpt.

“We help Australian businesses gain access to the R&D Tax Incentive and government grants to fund their innovations and commercialise their ideas,” Josh explains.

“I’ve always had the drive to start and manage my own business. I’m now fulfilling that lifetime dream by obtaining funding for our clients, investing in Australia and innovating right here in our great country.”

Josh says his passion is working with local start-up businesses that are disrupting traditional industries that have lacked any serious innovation. “I'm privileged to work with inventors, creators and innovators that are developing ground-breaking technologies and innovations right here in Australia, which is pretty cool to be a part of."

“It's been gratifying to create something from scratch that not only fulfils my ambitions but can assist so many Australian companies in fulfilling theirs. I'm excited to see where we take prmpt and execute some of the ambitious goals we have set for the coming years.”

Josh's career didn’t take him straight to entrepreneurship. In fact, the Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of International Business graduate spent time working out where his passions lay in several different jobs before taking the leap and creating prmpt.

He credits his time at Griffith in giving him the transferable skills he needed to explore his goals. “My degree has led me to careers in e-commerce, software, project management and now research and development consultancy.”

His advice for future graduates is simple. “It's essential to take the time to try different things throughout your career to find what you're genuinely passionate about. Once you do that and become an expert in your field, it no longer feels like work, and the money will eventually come,” he says.

“It took me years to work this out, but I wouldn't have the skills, experience, or knowledge to be doing what I am today without learning this.”

Josh says he’s had many doors open to him thanks to the range of opportunities he received during his studies. “Griffith was fundamental in setting out the foundations for everything I stand for in my career today, from community engagement to consistently learning and improving my knowledge.”

During his time at Griffith, he was an active member of the Griffith Business School Student Leadership Program, and was recognised as the Program's inaugural Valedictorian. And since graduation Josh has remained engaged in the Griffith community, as a Griffith Mentor, guest lecturer and the former Chair of the Alumni Advisory Group to name a few.

“It’s great to come back to campus from time to time and guest lecture a class to give genuine, real insights to students and motivate them to start planning their post-uni pathway. Attending the Alumni events is also a great way to connect with other Alumni and the dedicated Griffith staff,” he says.

“For me, Griffith provided a forum to develop the necessary skills in business that a textbook cannot teach, whether that be via the student clubs, leadership program or alumni engagement programs.”
