National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

For 50 years, NAIDOC Week has celebrated the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities — strong, proud, and unapologetic. Each year, its themes have called for truth, celebrated culture, honoured resistance, and reinforced the enduring strength of community.

Flag raising ceremonies

Each year during NAIDOC Week, the University hosts flag raising ceremonies across our campuses.

This is an opportunity to bring together members of our Griffith community to publicly commemorate the importance of NAIDOC Week, honour our continued connection to culture and country, and respectfully acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

2026 Theme: 50 Years of Deadly

The 2026 NAIDOC Week theme, 50 Years of Deadly marks a significant milestone. It recognises the contributions of Elders, organisers, artists, and communities who have shaped and sustained the movement over five decades.

More than a reflection on the past, this year’s theme highlights the momentum that continues to build — a testament to the strength of culture, leadership, and community.

NAIDOC Week remains grounded in community, honouring what has come before while continuing to look ahead. We encourage the Griffith community to create their own meaningful events and actions that celebrate and embody the 2026 theme.
