Professor Matthew Currell

Matthew Currell is a professor of hydrogeology and ARC Future Fellow based in the Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University. In 2024-25 Professor Currell served as the head of civil and environmental engineering in the School of Engineering and Built Environment, and previously, he was program director (environmental engineering) and a member of Academic Board at Melbourne’s RMIT University.

Professor Currell is a leading Australian authority in the field of hydrogeology with more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. He has served on the editorial board of the Hydrogeology Journal and was chair of the technical committee for the 2025 International Association of Hydrogeologists congress. He has been engaged as an expert witness in court proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia, Planning and Environment Court and Land Court of Queensland. Professor Currell has worked extensively in Asia and the Pacific region on water contamination, water supply and water security issues, and is a fluent speaker of mandarin Chinese.
