Mr Jason Murakami

(Governor-in-Council appointed member - from October 2025)

Jason Murakami is considered one of Queensland’s most experienced solicitor attorneys.

He is an expert litigator with more than 30 years experience, having acted in some of the country's most complex and high-profile court proceedings, involving criminal prosecutions, defamation proceedings, family property disputes, domestic violence and criminal prosecutions arising out of interpersonal relationships.

Jason first studied at Griffith University in 1989 in the Politics and Public Policy Faculty under the direction of former Chancellor Glyn Davis whilst completing his journalism cadetship with News Ltd.

After completing his journalism qualifications Jason completed his law degree at Queensland University of Technology before completing his legal training at internationally renowned Minter Ellison Lawyers in the late 1990’s.

Jason is the founding partner and current Director of one of Queensland's leading boutique litigation firms Behlau Murakami Grant ILP.

In 2001 he established the Griffith University Innocence Project after his attendance at the Cadozo Law School, New York and provided more than two decades of pro bono work for indigent citizens alleging wrongful convictions.

In 2012 he was appointed an Adjunct Professor of Law at Griffith University for his contributions to the access of law.

Jason is also considered one of Queensland’s leading DNA Lawyers having written many published joint-articles and joint-submissions to the State government on the topic and regularly presents and chairs forums on behalf of the Queensland Law Society to assist fellow legal practitioners on critical issues of law.

He is a current nominated member of the Queensland Law Society’s Domestic Violence Committee.

In 2025 Jason was appointed by the Governor-in-Council to the Griffith University Council and was also a finalist in the Queensland Law Society’s annual law excellence awards for providing access to justice.

Jason is the Honorary General Counsel for non-profit charity Giving Back Qld Pty Ltd which provides assistance to challenged youth and which World Cruiser Weight Boxing Champion Jai Opetaia is the Foundation Patron and he is also an active member and youth sailing charity contributor at the Southport Yacht Club.
