Growth mindset development for young women

Building Growth Mindset Through LEGO® Serious Play® is a joint program delivered by the Centre for Work, Organisation and Wellbeing and GUMURRII Student Success Unit.

Phase 1 overview

Funded by Investing in Queensland Women, Dr Jiraporn Surachartkumtonkun and Dr Carys Chan have implemented Phase 1 of a  growth mindset program for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander as well as culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) young women enrolled in universities across Southeast Queensland.

The research team partnered with GUMURRII Student Success Unit, Mr Stuart Allen and Dr Jennifer-leigh Campbell to co-design and create in-person growth mindset development and LEGO® Serious Play® workshops for young women.

Workshops

In March 2024, the team conducted four workshops over two weeks at GUMURRII Student Success Unit at the Nathan and Gold Coast campuses. In these workshops, students learned about the concepts of fixed and growth mindsets through examples of high-achieving individuals from various fields as well as various research findings that showed the benefits of growth mindset.

Students had opportunities to reflect on their past experiences of fixed and growth mindsets. They identified what triggered those mindsets and shared experiences in class to learn from each other. In the final workshop, our First Nation female leaders, Dr Julie Ballangarry and Dr Jennifer-leigh Campbell discussed their journey of struggles, challenges, and achievements to inspire and reinforce the growth mindset concept to students and encourage them to value learning and hard work and efforts to achieve goals.

Phase 2 overview

Dr Surachartkumtonkun and Dr Chan will continue their work in Phase 2 of the project with GUMURRII Student Success Unit and First Nations scholars to develop online modules for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander as well as CALD students to learn about growth mindset and be inspired by First Nation female leaders.

The online modules will also provide practical resources for educators looking to create and implement the growth mindset development program using LEGO® Serious Play® in their schools and communities.
