Informing the future of sports and events

The Events and Sport Management cluster is leading innovative projects that harness the momentum of Brisbane 2032. Our research informs the strategic planning, delivery, and long-term legacy of major sporting events. Through collaboration and insight, we aim to enhance outcomes for communities, governments, and the global sporting community.

Our expertise

Our researchers have expertise in:

  • Strategic planning, delivery, and legacy design of major events.
  • Evaluating event outcomes and generating evidence-based insights to improve event operations and visitor experiences.
  • Designing tools to evaluate and improve event operations and visitor experience

With a focus on Brisbane 2032 and beyond, we work across disciplines to generate insights that enhance event experiences, strengthen community outcomes, and inform policy and practice. We collaborate with industry, government, and international partners to ensure events deliver meaningful and lasting impact.

Sustainability and Resilience Building Toolkit

The Sustainability and Resilience Building Toolkit was co-designed, piloted, and refined by Laura Lesar, Sarah Gardiner, James Higham, and David Weaver in partnership with Experience Gold Coast’s events division. The project embeds sustainability and resilience into event planning and delivery, integrating social, economic, and environmental considerations. This collaborative approach produced practical resources tailored to Gold Coast events and provides a replicable model for organisations aiming to strengthen sustainable event management and community resilience.

Outcomes and benefits

The project delivered practical resources and measurable impact:

  • Toolkit tailored for Experience Gold Coast events
  • Step-by-step guidance manual for implementation
  • Supplier guidelines for sustainable practices
  • Comprehensive report summarising sustainability performance
  • Benefits: stronger supplier engagement, operational efficiency, and more sustainable outcomes
