Dzung Dao

Assoc. Prof. Dao is a passionate teacher in Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. His teaching philosophy is based on the CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate) framework and experiential learning to develop student's critical & creative thinking capability and hands-on skills, enable them to solve unfamiliar and complicated real-word engineering problems. The courses that he has been teaching include Mechanical Engineering Design, Mechatronic Systems Design and Engineering, Electromechanics, Precision Engineering and Prototyping, Kinematics and Dynamics.

Assoc. Prof Dao's research has been focused on Advanced sensing technology, MEMS sensors & actuators, sensors for harsh environments, and Mechatronics. He has published over 185 journal papers, 180 conference papers, 5 books/book chapters, and filed 17 patents. Most papers were published on high-impact journals, including Nature Communications (Impact factor >11), Science Advances (IF > 12), Nano Energy (IF > 15), and so on.

Dr Dao has collaborated and provided technological consulting services to over 15 companies in Australia, Japan and USA to develop new devices and technology in the field of MEMS and advanced sensing.

He has secured over $6.5M research funds from governments, industry and universities, including ARC DP, ARC linkage, ARC LIEF grants, industry consultancy grants, university equipment grants, etc.

Gold Coast is a beautiful city with a sunny, subtropical climate and has become widely known for its world-class surfing beaches, high-rise dominated skyline, theme parks, and rainforest hinterland. This is an ideal city for studying and relaxing. Our group regularly organises outdoor activities, such as BBQs, picnics to beautiful places in Gold Coast, to build up our multicultural friendship and strengthen research collaborations among young international researchers.   • Our research on optoelectronic effects in SiC/Si has been accepted for publication on Nano Energy (Impact Factor: 15.548) and Science Advances (Impact factor 12.804).

  • Our paper "Giant piezoresistive effect by optoelectronic coupling in a heterojunction" has been accepted for publication on a top tier journal Nature Communications (Impact factor 11.878). Link to the paper

  • A patent has been filed for our new discovery on “Optoelectronic coupling platforms and sensors”, Dutch Patent office, App. No. 2023306, 6/2019.
  • Abu Riduan Md Foisal and Vivekananthan Balakrishnan have completed their PhD program and been awarded the PhD degree. Big Congratulations to Dr Foisal and Dr Vivek on this great achievement!

April 2019

  • Our research on “Superior Sensor Network for Harsh Environments” has been funded by the Foundation for Australia-Japan Studies (FAJS) under the Rio Tinto Australia-Japan Collaboration Project”. The collaborators in this project include the University of Tokyo (Japan), Aichi Institute of Technology (Japan), Eco-Road Hero Pty Ltd (Australia), and TW Riley Pty Ltd (Australia). March 2019

  • Our Mechanical Engineering at Griffith University has received the highest possible rating of 5 (well above the world standard) in recent ERA (Excellence in Research for Australia) results. Only 8 out of 20 evaluated universities in Australia could achieve this highest level. This excellent result reflects the high-quality, world-leading research of our academic staff, researchers and PhD students, and the vibrant research environments at our School and sister Queensland Micro- and Nanotechnology Centre (QMNC), Griffith University. November 2018

  • Prof N-T Nguyen, A/Prof D. Dao and other colleagues from Griffith, UQ, QUT and UoN have been awarded $438,783 for the ARC Linkage Infrastructure. Equipment and Facilities scheme.
  • Khoa Nguyen has been awarded the PhD degree after 3-year study at Griffith. Big Congrats to Dr Khoa Nguyen!

October 2018

  • Four 2nd year mechanical students represent Griffith to compete at the 31st Warman Design and Build and Competition, Sydney, Australia. Griffith team came 9th among 19 teams from universities across Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia. Every year, over 2500 mechanical students are challenged by Engineers Australia to provide solutions for unfamiliar problems.

  • Successful ARC Discovery Project: Prof N.T. Nguyen,  Prof W. Li, Dr M. Shiddiky, and Dr D. Dao were awarded $473,470for the project “Magnetofluidic sample handling for enhanced point-of-care diagnosis ” for 3 years
  • Successful ARC LIEF (Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities) Project: Prof N.T. Nguyen, Dr Dao and colleagues from QUT, UQ were awarded $1,136,244 for the project "Xe-plasma dual beam for advanced future materials".
  • Dr Dao attended the CDIO Fall Meeting in Sunshine Coast, Australia.

September 2017:

  • Dr Dao and colleagues from Griffith School of Engineering Dr Peter Woodfield, Prof David Thiel, Dr Sascha Stegen and Dr Huaizhong Li in partnership with SuperCool Asia Pacific Pty Ltd (Australia) have been awarded an INNOVATIVE MANUFACTURING CRC Project grant for 2-year project "Develop and manufacture a smart electric compressor for refrigeration and air conditioning on electric vehicles". Total budget: $365,220.

July 2017:

  • Congrats to Dr Afzaal Qamar on taking the Research Fellow position at Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS) Department, University of Michigan, USA.

May 2017:

  • Dr Dao and QMNC colleagues Prof Nam-Trung Nguyen, Prof Sima Dimitrijev and Mr Alan Iacopi in partnership with SPT Microtechnologies (USA) have been awarded an ARC Linkage Project grant for 3-year project "Superior Silicon Carbide Nanoscale Sensors (SCANS) for Harsh Environments". Total budget: $563,000.
  • Toan and Shahrzad just have been awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Congratulations to Dr Toan Dinh and Dr Shahrzad Seyed Mohammad Shahi!

Feb 2017:

  • Afzaal has been awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy after 2.8 years study at Griffith. Big congrats to Dr Afzaal Qamar.

December 2016:

  • Dr Dao was the General Chair of the 5th International Conference on BioSensors, BioElectronics, BioMedical Devices, BioMEMS/NEMS & Applications: Bio4Apps2016. November 2016:

  • Dr Dao received an Honorable Award from the Mayor of Gold Coast City for Outstanding Contribution to Gold Coast as a Champion of Gold Coast Tourism Ambassadors.
