Focus on turning your interest into a career

Photography strongly influences the ways we express ourselves, how we perceive the world, and the forming of public opinion. A degree in Visual Arts prepares students for a professional career, providing you with the skills and knowledge to turn your creative photographic talents into a rewarding business.

Study photography at Griffith

Interrogate and challenge the meaning of the image, notions of authorship, and the medium itself, through speculative, innovative and informed practice.

Led by internationally recognised experts in the fields of lens-based practice, curatorial practice and critical theory, students will receive a grounding in historical and current lens-based practices (still and moving images), complemented by an exploration of the philosophical underpinnings of the medium and the subjects it addresses.

Study in a creative and collaborative environment with access to cutting-edge facilities. You’ll engage in learning activities that are structured to develop your own critical understandings of photography’s dynamic role in influencing the world around us, and you’ll gain insights around harnessing that knowledge to shape and enhance your own individual practice.

Lay the foundation for success

As a major in the Bachelor of Visual Arts, your photography studies provide the opportunity for in-field study in a variety of locations.

We’re proud to deliver an outstanding education that supports our students in facing the future with confidence, competence and the knowledge and skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Practical experience

Take up exciting work placements to build your portfolio and cultivate important industry contacts and networks and learn about professional photographic-quality printing through our LiveImage commercial arm. You can also gain credit towards your Visual Arts degree while enjoying exciting cultural experiences and advancing your professional skills on an international study tour.

Exhibitions and artist talks

Throughout your degree you will have the opportunity to attend on-campus exhibitions, guest lectures, master classes and artist talks. You will also have the chance to exhibit and sell your work in our Queensland College of Art and Design galleries.

Double degree

The Bachelor of Visual Arts/Bachelor of Business double degree enables you to refine your creative craft and artistic vision along with developing practical business skills. You’ll graduate with core competencies such as critical and analytical thinking, business communication and decision-making. Gain skills in your chosen practice and learn how to effectively and efficiently manage creative ventures from a business perspective.

Joshua Prieto

Bachelor of Photography

Griffith photography, film and journalism students travelled to Cambodia, spending time on assignment with local NGOs to capture some of the country’s untold stories. Photography student Joshua Prieto has embraced the global mobility opportunities offered by Griffith, also travelling to Nepal and touring western Queensland to further his education outside the classroom. He relished the opportunity to get off the tourist trail and delve deeper into life in Cambodia.

“Travel forces you to push yourself outside your comfort zone. My technical skills improved out of sight, and it was amazing to be working side by side with journalism students and filmmakers from Griffith Film School.”

“Seeing the amazing work the NGOs do in Cambodia, and the bravery and grace of the people there was a life changing experience. It confirmed my decision to pursue photojournalism after graduation.”

More scholarships than ever before!
